Interview with Peter Kuczia

Home > Designer Interviews > Peter Kuczia

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Peter Kuczia (PK) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Peter Kuczia by clicking here.

Interview with Peter Kuczia at Thursday 30th of April 2020

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
PK: Actually, it took me a long time after my architecture studies to understand that design is really my passion. Designing has become both a profession and a hobby for me. Now it is my life...

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
PK: For many years I designed large public and commercial buildings for one of the largest architectural practices in Germany, among them stadiums for the German Bundesliga, university buildings or hospitals. Parallel to this I founded KUCZIA architects and has been successfully concentrating on smaller but ambitious projects. My work has been awarded multiple international prizes, including International Design Award (US), Iconic Award (DE), DNA Paris Design Awards (FR), LICC London Creative Competition (UK), German Design Award (DE), Green GOOD DESIGN Award (US), a national nomination to the MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD for European Architecture, and many others. My projects have been published in over 50 books and hundreds of magazines on five continents and exhibited in many countries.

FS: What is "design" for you?
PK: For me, design is the fusion of knowledge and intuition.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
PK: I have already planned many large-format buildings. But I prefer to design small houses. Every house is unique. Behind every such project stand people with their stories, problems and dreams. Every house has a unique environment, neighborhood. Each time it is a long process until the optimal design is found. But then, when the inhabitants are happy with their house, that is the greatest satisfaction for me.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
PK: My most favorite design is WORMHOUSE - The Breathing House. Is is a small, low budget ecological house in South of Poland. The great luck with this project was to have a client who is open to very crazy ideas, but at the same time demands a strictly rational justification for every creative idea from me. He maintains a website of the project - it's worth looking there: www.wormhouse.pl

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
PK: With enthusiasm and conviction I use photovoltaic modules as BIPV (Building Integrated PV), if only it is possible. It is not about elements placed on the facade or roof, but about a complete integration of the energy generating modules into the building skin. In this way the roofs and facades become aesthetic energy sources.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
PK: I can't say exactly when such moments occur, but it's true that on some days the ideas in my head literally explode, and on others I get mentally stuck.

FS: What makes a design successful?
PK: Even the best design ideas are of little value if they are not consistently implemented and realized. I think the consistency in the implementation of the basic ideas to the end is what makes the design successful.

FS: How can people contact you?
PK: Per e-mail: info@kuczia.com or by phone: +49 163 9295050

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
