Interview with Design Dossier at Friday 13th of March 2020

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
DD: Our company has made a long way from a small creative agency founded in 2004 to a big interactive content and installations production. Hi-end design has always been a key driver for our company and is even a part of our company name.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
DD: We work on the edge of new technologies bringing them to exhibition and event marketing spheres.

FS: What is "design" for you?
DD: Design is creating things that you can’t imagine!

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
DD: The once that we have never made before. Especially if no one else has ever made them yet.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
DD: We like bionic and kinetic design because it is about what future will look like.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
DD: It was too many years ago to remember.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
DD: Unreal Engine for creating 3D content.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
DD: When you have an impossible goal in front.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
DD: We start from marketing goal of the client and then design a technical shape for his key messages.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
DD: Excitement.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
DD: Proudness.

FS: What makes a design successful?
DD: In our sphere main success is when the design is remembered for long and when the company is known by its works, not just by its name.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
DD: Marketing effectiveness, content-richness and esthetic uniqueness.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
DD: Designers are those who are able to balance and harmonize human activity and nature and they have to use their chance to do that.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
DD: Design and creativity in general are the things that can not be completely replaced by machines, so it will be on demand and will be evolving rapidly as the technological progress gives a lot of new opportunities.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
DD: BEMA 2020 in February 2020. Next one is Moscow Urban Forum in July.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
DD: We search for inspiration in new technologies and their application in different spheres.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
DD: Technological and futuristic. Our approach is that almost any idea can be implemented due to the current level of technologies, so designers and creators shall not be limited in their ideas.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
DD: Moscow, Russia. We travel a lot and do projects all over the world, so the influence is more in the demand to the very new solutions all the time that comes from big Russian clients, rather then cultural influence.

FS: How do you work with companies?
DD: We work mainly with the clients directly (not through the agencies) and we provide complete service during the project, so that the client doesn’t need to think of how parts of the project will come together.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
DD: We think that clients shall not work with designers directly, but via the manager, because creative people shall be creating and not spending time trying to meet clients’ requests.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
DD: So on every project there is a manager who communicates with client and then form design, creative and technical team of the project from different departments of the company to implement the project.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
DD: Design shall not just be a piece of art, but shall meet the needs of a particular client that ordered it (if we speak about custom design).

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
DD: You need to spend years to prove your reputation and responsibility, but once it has been proven you have chance to find clients that completely rely on your taste.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
DD: Don’t work with people who say that something is impossible. Never show half-made work to the client.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
DD: Taste, responsibly, creativity.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
DD: Unreal Engine, Unity, Adobe 3DMax, Adobe after effect, Adobe Photoshop, VRay, Corona Render, Catalist, WatchOut, Resolume Arena

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
DD: Hardly)) that’s why good team of designers shall be followed by a better team of managers.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
DD: 2 weeks - 4 months

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
DD: Where do ideas come from.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
DD: Dassault Systemes, Gasprom Neft, Astra Logistique, Benetton, Moscow City Government, United Aircraft Corporation, Skolkovo, etc.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
DD: The work that involves all our key competences - environmental or exhibition design, content, interactive and kinetic technologies, programming and multimedia.
