Interview with Rodrigo AndriÀn at Friday 3rd of April 2020 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? RA: As long as I can remember, I always drew and painted, I liked to create and imagine, but I also always knew that I needed to create something that differentiated me from other artists, over time my artistic language developed. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? RA: I visited Parque São Vicente, a neighborhood close to an area of environmental preservation, in the city of Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, I saw a land for sale in front of the lake, immediately I decided that I would build mine there studio, very close to the Atlantic forest. FS: What is "design" for you? RA: Design for me is a way of creating a new reality, so that people live with a better quality of life, combining progress and new technologies with respect for the environment. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? RA: I like to create paintings, for me it is the best way to create a new world. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? RA: My favorite design is the series of paintings that I created representing Brazilian rivers, which gave rise to the exhibition that will remain throughout 2020 at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. This exhibition shows the viewer the need to take care of our planet's fresh water. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? RA: The first thing I designed for a company was my "Silhouettes in Action" project, where I work with the silhouette of several individuals representing actions based on a specific theme. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? RA: My favorite material is acrylic painting on canvas, it is the medium that best suits my work, because it offers me an immediate result just as I designed it. But above all, acrylic paint is soluble in water, which does not harm the environment. FS: When do you feel the most creative? RA: When I feel more creative, there is no time or place, I simply have an idea and feel the need to carry it out, sometimes it happens in the middle of the night, even in the middle of the street. But when I have a challenge, it really brings out my creativity, so I work tirelessly until I finish my design. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? RA: I usually focus on the line when I create my design, I like to combine the rigidity of the geometric line with the sinuosity of the organic line. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? RA: When I create, I feel a great enthusiasm, a frantic need to act to reach the result I am looking for. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? RA: When I arrive at the result I expected for my design, I generally feel great satisfaction for having achieved my goal, and the first idea is not always the one that remains, because everything can change during the process, as I walk with the line over the canvas creating shapes and then filling them with colors. FS: What makes a design successful? RA: I think the success of a design has a lot to do with the artist's feeling during his creative process, what he feels about the world and what he discovers within himself and proposes to let be born on the screen. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? RA: I think that a design cannot simply be categorized as good or bad, but what counts is how the artist manages to reach the audience, I believe that, regardless of the aesthetic or functional issue, when the artist manages to awaken some feeling in the viewer , it does reveal the beauty and grandeur of its design. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? RA: In my view, the greatest responsibility of a designer is to be able to create something by combining new materials and technologies while maintaining awareness of preservation and respect for the environment. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? RA: I think that the field of design is evolving precisely when looking for adaptable solutions for new materials that do not harm the environment, so it is directed towards the future. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? RA: My most recent exhibition is being presented at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation Museum of Life, where research is being carried out in Brazil to contain covid-19. The exhibition showing the importance of water preservation was momentarily interrupted by the pandemic. And I want my next exhibition to be with the "Design Award". FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? RA: Most of my work is inspired by the theme of the environment. My creativity comes from my need to create things that inspire people in a positive way. And my sources of inspiration are in the beauty of life that provide people's well-being, and I believe that it is directly linked to nature. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? RA: I started to explore this figurative style further, approaching abstractionism as I realized that the figures I create inspire people to make new readings and discover other ways of seeing reality. The way I work with lines, shapes and colors, giving movement to the image, creating an open work, this arouses people's curiosity and allows them to see what they want to see, these are the most striking features, but the main approach it is the aesthetic of beauty. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? RA: I live in Brazil, I believe that the Brazilian culture is very present in my work, just as the light and the tropicality of the country directly affects the result of my projects, and the public response gives me the certainty that it is a very positive influence . FS: How do you work with companies? RA: When someone wants to hire my work, I am interested in knowing what their expectations, goals and aspirations are, so I can create a design that will identify with what they expect. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? RA: I advise companies to look for a design that provides people's well-being and is made with materials that do not harm the environment, as this is the great challenge of this time. FS: How can people contact you? RA: Through my email rodrigoandrian@hotmail.com, social media like Instagram @rodrigoandrian, https://www.linkedin.com/in/rodrigo-andriàn-a0670634/
