Interview with Marco Ferrari at Tuesday 25th of August 2020

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MF: I started to sail very young and I moved towards yacht design at a young age, since then I learned various things that led me to this point.

FS: What is "design" for you?
MF: Design is creating something that does not exist.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MF: I like drawing yachts the most.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MF: Ferrari in car design particularly 250 short wheelbase, while J Class in yacht design.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
MF: I began to work in a shipyard designing yachts.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
MF: It depends on the place and situation.

FS: What makes a design successful?
MF: Proportions

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MF: In yacht design I think the proportions are vey important and of course the functionality.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MF: It's very important to design eco-friendly transportation whith future in mind.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MF: My main inspiration is from nature and particularly the sea and its animals.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
MF: I think my design could be described as timeless as I take inspiration from classic design but with modern updates. I'm moving towards something more innovative and futuristic.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MF: I live in Italy where design and architecture is very important since many centuries. In the last years it's very important car and yacht design. I think the cultural heritage of my country is very important and affected me.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
MF: I begin with hand sketch and then the design is passed to digital realization in 3D.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
MF: Follow the proportions.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MF: Of course designing by hand and digitally in 3D and 2D. But of course also books and pictures as source of inspiration.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
MF: Planning ahead.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
MF: At least some months

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
MF: Both
