Interview with Emre Ozsoz at Thursday 30th of April 2020 ![]() FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? EO: I graduated from Kadir Has University, Department of Industrial Product Design in 2010. After that, I worked on 3D modeling and interactive content at Digital Panorama. Now, I am working as an Industrial Product Designer at Polin Waterparks. Since my childhood, I like drawing and designing. I didn’t dream that I would become a designer when I grew up. My family supported me all time and I worked hard. As a result, I am where I want to be. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? EO: Our company has been established in 1976 and it works more passionately to be a strong international brand with innovative products and services day by day. It’s a global leader in its own sector. With a team of 450 people, Polin is capable to provide services to its customers in the fields of designing, production, installation, and maintenance. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? EO: I like designing for the entertainment industry. Also, I like designing bicycle. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? EO: I like the designs of Astro Studios in SF. Design languages contain simple and defined lines. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? EO: My first design is kids slide. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? EO: My favourite material is kevlar, and favourite technology is 3d printer. FS: When do you feel the most creative? EO: I feel most creative when I am in the calm and quiet places. Especially in the environments where I can be alone with my mind. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? EO: First, I focus on its relationship/interaction with people. As, human is one of the most important factors. Then I focus on function and design. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? EO: I feel that designing clarifies my mind with getting rid of whole unnecessary things that fill it. FS: What makes a design successful? EO: The most important thing that makes a design successful is that it serves its purpose. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? EO: First, I focus on the purpose of the designed product. If it serves its purpose, I evaluate it from the perspective of functionality and visuality. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? EO: Society, nature, and designers always have an integrated and influenced structure. We see traces of society and nature in our designs because they are significant factors that affect the designers. As long as our designs are sustainable, they benefit both nature and society. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? EO: The design is getting more and more digital. Technologies such as virtual reality are being used more actively in designs. In this way, we have the chance to experience our designs in the most realistic way. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? EO: I generally observe the environment. People and natüre affect my design by giving unique ideas. Particularly, people's habits and behaviors are very important factors. Nature is a design element in itself, every point is flawless. It is impossible not to be impressed or affected by nature. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? EO: I don't have a specific design style. However, I usually try to make simple and plain designs. I try to apply this approach from design to color selection at every point. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? EO: I live in Istanbul. Mosaic nationallity structure of Istanbul contains different cultures from all over the world. Also, it is the one of the oldest major city in the world history, mentioned features enable peerles opportunities to artists and designers. However, the city I live in does not affect my designs. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? EO: The design process begins with research, continues with sketching, and then ends with 3D modeling and visualization. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? EO: The most important skill for a designer is sketching. It allows us to put our ideas on paper from our minds. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? EO: Most importantly, I take advantage of experience and observations. Then generally I do some research from design books and the internet. I actively use rhinoceros, keyshot, and photoshop. These programs are indispensable. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? EO: It is a total period of time that I scheduled for the product to be designed. I proceed by dividing this period into related topics (research, design, etc.). FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? EO: Obviously, it depends on the product to be designed. Giving time would not be right. FS: What was your most important job experience? EO: My most important work experience started in Polin. Production, installation, and design have to be carried out simultaneously with different disciplines. Therefore, I gained a lot of experience here. FS: Who are some of your clients? EO: In general hotel owners, investors, and water park owners. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? EO: I have a design studio in my future plans. But I don't know when it happens. FS: How can people contact you? EO: They can contact me via e-mail.
