Interview with MARZIA BOAGLIO StoryArtDesigner at Tuesday 3rd of March 2020

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MBS: I was a graphic designer until, one day, a client ask to me something special for his home: 4 artworks for 4 doors. In that moment I decided to tell his story: a love story with the girlfriend, this couple would be a family because a baby girl was arriving... In the first time of my life I created artworks in total freedom which would become doors, furnishing elements with a special story. My drawing became wood, became alive, and my client and me were touched. This wonderful emotion was my breaking point with the past.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
MBS: With my partners I work every day to create something new, new emotions, new challenges with new materials in connection with craftsmanship and innovation.

FS: What is "design" for you?
MBS: The design is a language, is a special charm that create a new world in a space.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MBS: No preferences, I love speak with the people, listen, observe. Feel the other and "read" emotions and feelings. After this I can crate something special for him. I am curious and challenges stimulate my creativity.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MBS: My most favorite design is ESPLOSIONE (explosion): A racing pulse, a short breath as when facing a dazzling light, feeling disorientated by all the sensations that are being experienced.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
MBS: 2,5x2,5meters of futurist 235 house number in Piazza CLN Turin. The depiction of a house number, surrounded by shapes with which it interacts and unites, wishes to celebrate the entrance into a dwelling with a story and a style of its own.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
MBS: The wood: the first love can never be forgotten.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
MBS: There isn't a specific moment, probably in a sunny day, in spring... The feeling with the customer is the secret.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
MBS: On the power of the artwork.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
MBS: Abstraction, Relax, wellness.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MBS: Pathos.

FS: What makes a design successful?
MBS: The ability to surprise.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MBS: Memories respect. The will is to resume the artistic movement of Futurism that makes this type of inlay work modern and contemporary which in reality is historical and handed down from generation to generation, is part of the knowledges of Made in Italy. However, there is a more contemporary situation of this style and therefore both the type of work and the object itself are reborn.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
MBS: The ability to convey emotion. Today an object must excite.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
MBS: The city of Turn is my gallery. I'm also partner in a 1.000mq of showroom in Venaria Reale.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MBS: People, emotions, feeling. I feed mu creativity with the curiosity, I observe everything around me, the art, the architecture, the nature... Often my haven is the quiet of the nature. My mountain, the stream and the birdsong...

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
MBS: I created the term "StoryArtDesigner" to explain my design, because I tell stories with my art on furnishing elements. I haven't competitors, nobody else do this.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MBS: I live in Turin, in Italy. My aim is respect the values of the Made in Italy. How many wonderful things can we make? How many artworks we have? Knowledge handed down from generation to generation...

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
MBS: I sketch the artwork on a paper then I scan it and I complete the drawing on computer with indications like the rotation of the essences, details and finishes. Then I send all to my supplier and we work together on the project researching the perfection.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
MBS: Be humble and respectful.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
MBS: Respect. Respect for people, whether they are customers or suppliers. Respect for nature. Respect for the past, for tradition.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MBS: A pencil and a paper.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
MBS: Oh yes! When you finish with a project on paper, starts the prototypal project...

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
MBS: It depends, 1 month, 1 year...

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
MBS: What is a StoryArtDesigner?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
MBS: The first order, the story on the 4 doors.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
MBS: I would like to diffuse the StoryArtDesigner concept.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
MBS: It depends. Often I work with architects or interior designer for a complete home project or restyling.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
MBS: A client would like one artwork on the wall, she ask my suggestions for all the house, I propose to change the doors, but I ask help to an interior designer because we need a coherent project. Next step: we will present a project that refresh all the house telling her story.

FS: How can people contact you?
MBS: By email: contacts@marziaboaglio.it
