Interview with Pedro André at Friday 19th of February 2021 ![]() FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? PA: Yes, I always wanted to be creative. Ever since I was little, I always loved creating. Whether with tools or Legos, the sky was the limit. It has always fascinated me to see what I was able to make using my creativity. With a particular fascination for Nordic design and the concept in giving meaning to industrial products. The relationship between human behavior, technologies and it´s interactions arises my creativity and the ability in offering new product solutions. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? PA: All the design process about furniture design. From the concept to the final product made by my own hands. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? PA: Nordic design. Clean, simple, pure and functional. The way how materials unites FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? PA: I think it was packaging design. But I´m not sure.. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? PA: My favorite material is wood. Like to work with wood and with all the transformation processes. FS: When do you feel the most creative? PA: When I´m alone. Without all the usual noise and daily stress. Need to be in a peaceful and calm place to relax and concentrate my self. That place can be surrounded by nature or home. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? PA: Function and simplicity, always guided by the industrial production. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? PA: Peace, happiness, joy, pleasure. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? PA: Accomplished. Love to see the physical product when it´s finished. FS: What makes a design successful? PA: It depends. Can be certain color, shape or function. But more important is the match between them that makes the design successful. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? PA: Form meets function? If not, it´s a bad design for me. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? PA: Improve the life quality of any person with meaningful products always concerned about the environment. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? PA: There's no future without design. Design is everywhere. Creative areas like design are currently the qualities most sought in this global and industrialized world. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? PA: I think it was the Red Dot award´s gala in Germany in 2012. Honestly, I don't know where it will be my next exhibition. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? PA: I´m never be quiet. Nowadays there's a lot of places to seek inspiration. Internet, books, documentaries, etc. Usually I don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while working. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? PA: Don't complicate. The main word is always simplicity. The key is the details. That´s what gives meaning to my products. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? PA: Only the weather affects my design. The sunny weather of Portugal is the secret to my daily inspiration. Indisputably affects my mood positively. And I think it´s a great influence regarding the rest of the world. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? PA: Depends the type of work. But creativity and integrity are the most important qualities for me when it comes to select a good professional. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? PA: My woodshop tools. And all of them are important to get the best result. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? PA: They must lose the fear of being wrong. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? PA: if you are creative there is no negative points for being a designer. It´s a privilege. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? PA: Balance and alignment. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? PA: The most we can get. So, adaptability would be great. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? PA: Many software like SolidWorks, Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? PA: Usually don't have issues with my time. I´m a good manager of my time. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? PA: Depends the object. Could be two weeks, two months or two years. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? PA: When is job done? FS: What was your most important job experience? PA: Live and work in another country. FS: Who are some of your clients? PA: Don´t have personal clients. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? PA: Hand drawing and build the products if it´s possible. Hand work is very important to me. Sometimes it´s important to feel the materials and to know the production process. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? PA: Never stop learning. Always try to learn and explore more everyday. Try to do something new everyday. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? PA: Work as a team. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? PA: Not working on relevant projects at the moment. FS: How can people contact you?
