Interview with Sungkyun Bae at Saturday 23rd of October 2021 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? SB: I have been interested in storytelling since I was a child. I chose a platform called animation to tell my story to people. This is because animation is less restrictive in expression. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? SB: I am working for a one-man company. My company not only produces 2D and 3D animations, but also produces character design, logo design, motion graphics and commercials. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? SB: The first work I did at the brodcasting station was to produce a campaign for active children. FS: What makes a design successful? SB: I believe that the key to successful design is empathy. A lot of people think that a good design must be sympathetic to the design. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? SB: I think good design inspiration comes from the road. When you always see the same thing, it is easy to think of the same thing. So, on the ever-changing road, I get inspired by seeing different things and hearing different things. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? SB: I live in south Korea. Koreans are very interested in and influenced by other people. So you can always easily share the latest trends through them. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? SB: The most important abilities for a designer are observation and expression. You have to observe a lot, interpret it in your own way, and then express it. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? SB: When I do my work, I mainly use computer programs. I use photoshop, illustrator, maya, cinema4d, unreal engine, etc. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? SB: When I work, I always start in the morning with what I need to do for the day. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? SB: Where do you get your inspiration? FS: Who are some of your clients? SB: Mostly, game companies and broadcasting stations are my main clients. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? SB: I mostly work alone as an individual. FS: How can people contact you? SB: studioroom.skb@gmail.com behance.net/jokerb
