Interview with Marc Kelly at Wednesday 22nd of April 2020 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? MK: A love for all things creative from a very young age, I set my sights on becoming an artist from my farthest memories. I studied Art and Design in Irish Institutions before working with various creative companies in Ireland and the UK FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? MK: Marc Kelly Sculpture is a small company base in rural county Monaghan, Ireland. The design studio is a hub of creative expression which flows into the workshop once designs are realised. FS: What is "design" for you? MK: Design is everything, everywhere, everyone FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? MK: Sculpture FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? MK: Conflict Sculpture, I sent this work forward to this competition as I felt it had very strong design characteristics and would be recognised for it. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? MK: A public Sculpture, 10ft high work made up of a stainless steel form mounted on a carved Limestone pillar. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? MK: Irish Limestone FS: When do you feel the most creative? MK: When in nature or in a city FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? MK: form FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? MK: joy FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? MK: overjoyed, emotional FS: What makes a design successful? MK: understanding you ticked all the elements of your/ clients brief FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? MK: how it speaks to you, what is the design expressing and how does it achieve this. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? MK: the responsibility is there to be respectful but be inspirational for generations to come
