Interview with Basem El Koury at Monday 27th of April 2020 FS: What is "design" for you? BEK: Solving visual issues through the correct usage of art and materials. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? BEK: I am more of an experimental designer, who tries to know about many different design elements and see how every piece could fit together. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? BEK: The onse who provide real solution to visual issues and are packed up with a strong concepts. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? BEK: Logo. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? BEK: Holograms, not light illusions, I mean the real thing from the 80's and 90's. FS: When do you feel the most creative? BEK: There is no specific place. Creative ideas can come from anywhere, or they can be hidden for a very long period. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? BEK: To build my design on a concept and an idea. The visuals are secondary, becasue they can alter during your design process. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? BEK: I hope happiness. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? BEK: I hope happiness. FS: What makes a design successful? BEK: Sucess is not a measurement. If the visuals have done their purposes, which is to deliver the concept in an understandable way, then they are successful. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? BEK: If they fulfil their purposes, then they are good designs. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? BEK: Providing real solutions through visuals and physical materials/objects. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? BEK: No one can predict that, nor can someone guarantee, how the design field will change in the future. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? BEK: It was the final project of my university class in Austria. There is no date for my next exhibition. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? BEK: Literally from everywhere.
