Interview with Albena Dimitrova-Trankarova at Wednesday 22nd of May 2019
Albena Dimitrova-Trankarova
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
AD: For me, it was like an "inner drive". My journey to becoming a designer started back in high school. I was overwhelmed by the new technologies and the opportunity to create art with them. I found so much enjoyment in being creative and having artistic freedom! This is a luxury that many professions doesn't allow.

FS: What is "design" for you?
AD: I see design in everything - graphics, furnishings, architecture, nature etc! It inspires me, makes me think out of the box and generate ideas, it gives me emotions. For me design has no limitations, it gives me a sense of freedom to create something unique and meaningful that will broadcast the right message to the audience. Design is all around us and it matters!

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
AD: Logo design. It is a process that involves creative thinking, exploration process, even has a psychological touch. You need to get to know your client very well to create the logo he would identify with. Even his main competitors. The feeling to see my work done and my customers happy is incredible.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
AD: It was a project about full company identity, including a website, logo, stationery, pop-up stand, social media profiles etc.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
AD: The first thing I designed for a company was its logo mark.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
AD: I feel the most creative when I am rested and on my own. Sometimes I have unique ideas during my sleep that is why I always keep a pencil and a piece of paper on my bedside table. I found out for myself that I am the most creative when working on two projects at the same time. This way I can rest from the thought of each of the projects alternating them.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
AD: Every aspect of the design is important to me. This is a process in which the designer needs to be precise at every stage. A project wouldn't be successful if, for example, despite our accurate design work, we do not meet our customer's requirements and vice versa.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
AD: I feel inspired! Еnergized!

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
AD: I am happy and, of course, proud to see my projects realized. It is motivating when my clients recommend me to other potential clients.

FS: What makes a design successful?
AD: Design is successful when it broadcasts the right message.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
AD: If it is influential and touching.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
AD: I can be inspired by very simple things. I also attend exhibitions and pay attention to design trends and designer's works not only in my field.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
AD: I'm trying to think outside the box. Not to have a certain style! If my client does not restrict my creativity I aim to provide different concepts in different styles so that he can choose from.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
AD: My design process involves research, sketching, digitization, colour, presentation, revision and final graphic.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
AD: I have a few wood carvings I find inspiring.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
AD: I wake up early in the morning and

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
AD: Each success is a result of a lot of effort, so we always have to do our best.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
AD: Creativity and precision.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
AD: To have innovative and creative thinking, to be a perfectionist and to consider the client’s requirements.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
AD: I use mostly a professional editor for vector graphics; pen and touch tablet; Photoshop.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
AD: In fact, 80 % of the time working on a project I spend in creative thinking and brainstorming. And the remaining 20 % in actual drawing and the finishing touches. I sometimes come up with ideas during my sleep.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
AD: It depends. But generally speaking, it would be best if the designer is given ample time to finish the project. I find it very disrespectful if a client asks for a design to be done overnight.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
AD: Every project is important to me. I think the variety in my projects helps me a lot for my professional development.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
AD: I love any aspect of graphic design. One of my favourites is designing logos. Logo design is a process that involves creative thinking, exploration process, even has a psychological touch. You need to get to know your client very well to create the logo he would identify with. Even his main competitors. The feeling to see my work done and my customers happy is incredible.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
AD: Continue working.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
AD: I develop my designs myself.

FS: How can people contact you?
AD: LinkedIn, Facebook, my e-mail: d_albena@abv.bg or tel. 0038872664 / 0878524835

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
