Interview with HuaWei Dai at Thursday 3rd of January 2019 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? HD: I am studying architecture and art. I have a kind of obsession with beauty and I hope to integrate art and architecture to serve the society. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? HD: We have been working in architecture and interior design for nearly two decades, with a range of hotels, government projects, public spaces and commercial projects. FS: What is "design" for you? HD: Pencil do the think! FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? HD: Can create business value, both aesthetics and art. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? HD: The visually appealing design is functionally easy to use. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? HD: a fireplace FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? HD: I like natural wood because it has a sense of temperature. FS: When do you feel the most creative? HD: When the experience is accumulated enough, the technology is not a flying fairy. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? HD: The rational use of lighting, the correctness of the moving line. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? HD: When there is enough time, it will be full of creative desires. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? HD: Will be very happy FS: What makes a design successful? HD: Have enough experience in design love. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? HD: It is the first consideration to meet the convenience of the end user. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? HD: Try to use renewable resources to save energy. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? HD: After fully understanding the format, using the principles of interior design to expand different design areas, the future of design should be a win-win cooperation. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? HD: In December 2018, the Chongqing Mass Art Museum did not consider the next exhibition time. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? HD: Research on traditional culture and architecture. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? HD: The combination of tradition and innovation, I hope the public will not forget the traditional culture. Respect history and culture and explore the use of new technologies and materials. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? HD: In Chongqing, China, culture has a lot of influence on my design. The material culture in China is growing, and the demand for users is also growing. The demand for designers is constantly improving. FS: How do you work with companies? HD: Apply my design to a practice case FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? HD: Companies should judge the potential value of designers and develop designers with creative and independent thinking skills. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? HD: Starting in anticipation, the process is happy and the results are satisfactory. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? HD: 1921 hot pot restaurant, pub, resort hotel, children's palace, museum. FS: Can you describe a day in your life? HD: When listening to music, you will be happy to see the scene you like. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? HD: The expansion of technology, the accumulation of knowledge is very important, and it may not be design-related knowledge FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? HD: Using knowledge creation, getting self-identification is very positive, and I am full of doubts about the future. I think this is negative. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? HD: Pencil do the think! FS: What skills are most important for a designer? HD: Spatial imagination and observation. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? HD: Pencil, movie FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? HD: Rest without creation, doing other things, creating with inspiration. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? HD: A few minutes or a few days. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? HD: How to achieve? Can technology solve the problem? FS: What was your most important job experience? HD: architectural design FS: Who are some of your clients? HD: May be the whole society FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? HD: Graphic design, I will be very happy when I create FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? HD: Undertake non-native design work and want to travel more in the field FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? HD: teamwork FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about? HD: A hotel in a valley, similar to the project of Anzhen Hotel, is very challenging.
