Interview with Tam Kam Man Henry at Friday 21st of August 2020
Henry Tam
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
TKMH: Actually, design is not my career, I'm an amateur designer and I'm a professional accountant who focus in business management. But I love design very much, especially in product design, intelligent design and green energy. I'm not going to become a full-time designer but I hope my ideas can change the world a little bit.

FS: What is "design" for you?
TKMH: Design makes everything better and create new things as well.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
TKMH: Hardware, product designs, programming, green energy.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
TKMH: With all my previous designs, my most favorite and loved one was an internal combustion engine that could possibly save up to 50% of fuels compare with nowadays engines using in all vehicles. But due to intellectual property rights of others in some parts, this design had not been published yet.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
TKMH: When I tasting my loved espresso.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
TKMH: I am always stress in product function.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
TKMH: I felt very exciting every time when I have a new design idea in my mind.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
TKMH: For product designs, function is the most important.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
TKMH: Nowadays designers must have in mind to reduce waste, use less plastics, use less energy and create less carbon.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
TKMH: Design field is ever evolving! I think the future of design will focus on the topic of environment friendly.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
TKMH: My design inspiration always based on just two questions, they are "Why?" and "Why not?". Sometimes these questions are asked by myself when I saw something, and sometimes are asked by people around me.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
TKMH: I'm living in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a city which very fast and has a lot of people inside a small city, so living density is very high. For this reason, product marketing is easy and all brand in the world would like to distribute their products to Hong Kong, that makes me able to see every new products once it launched.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
TKMH: To create, not to copy.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
TKMH: Observation skill is the most important as a product designer, without observation skill, you never know what people needed, a good design should create things that satisfy what people needed.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
TKMH: As I'm an amateur designer, I have no time limit, I can modify my design again and again and launch it when I felt it is perfect.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
TKMH: Not certain, it depends on complexity of the object.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
TKMH: Both.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
TKMH: I am working on a power generator design that do not use fuel and no emissions. And compare with other renewable energy, this design is ever stable and no restriction on weather and geographic characteristics.

FS: How can people contact you?
TKMH: Phone, email, wechat, whatsapp

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
