Interview with Jay Qian at Tuesday 5th of June 2018 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? JQ: I am a master of industrial design candidate at Pratt Institute. The pursuit of making some unique when I was a child made me become an industrial designer. FS: What is "design" for you? JQ: Looks unique and has a positive social impact. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? JQ: I like designing transportation, especially some urban mobility. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? JQ: A piece of business card! FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? JQ: I like digital modeling and 3D-printing technology. FS: When do you feel the most creative? JQ: As always at midnight. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? JQ: The transportation design and urban mobility. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? JQ: Extremely exciting and happy! FS: What makes a design successful? JQ: For the users, it is easy to use and love to use.For the society, it has a positive impact and sustainable life circle. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? JQ: The sustainability will be my first consideration. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? JQ: I will visit different kinds of museums to feed my creativity. Also, I love nature which always inspires me a lot! FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? JQ: I was born in Shanghai, but now I am living in NewYork City. I love both of them. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? JQ: For me, observation and imagination are quite important . FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? JQ: That really depends on the individual project. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
