Interview with Aleksandra Lavrukhina at Tuesday 13th of June 2023
Aleksandra Lavrukhina
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
AL: I'm a landscape designer. I didn't even realize my vocation until I started living in a country house. There it was necessary to put the land plot in order. But I had never encountered this before, I did not know how to plant plants, and in general I did not know anything about gardening, because I had lived in the city since childhood. I had to start somewhere - study a bunch of websites, magazines and books about landscape design, cut out planting schemes and buy plants from a list of magazines, then plant them. After I started working with living plants and with the earth, I realized how interesting it is and that I really want to become a landscape designer.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
AL: At the moment, I create projects on my own. I invite proven teams to work on the implementation.

FS: What is "design" for you?
AL: Landscape design has become the meaning of life for me. I want to live it, constantly grow and develop in this area of design. I really like it.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
AL: I can't say what I like more. I try to create a harmonious garden where everything is connected - buildings, paving, lighting, plants and materials. To make it all together one living organism, one whole.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
AL: At the moment, of my works, 'Shades of Green' is the closest to me. It is very interesting, so calm and solemn at the same time. It has a lot of different plants of a green shade, going into steel, lime-yellow and blue colors. It also has a lot of spring and summer flowering plants. The garden turned out to be very harmonious and whole.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
AL: I love natural materials in everything-in decoration, furniture, decorative elements.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
AL: When inspiration comes to me and I see a concept in front of me.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
AL: I approach each stage of the design in as much detail as possible.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
AL: And calmness, and adrenaline.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
AL: Satisfaction, joy, confidence, pride.

FS: What makes a design successful?
AL: Attitude to design, attention to detail and perception of the picture as a whole.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
AL: A combination of textures, materials and colors, structure and architecture.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
AL: You need to appreciate nature and not try to change it for yourself, you need to use environmentally friendly materials.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
AL: Design has been, remains and will always be, everywhere and in everything. At different times - different design. It seems to me that technological design, web design, and animation will be better developed and in demand.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
AL: In different ways, it happens just out of nowhere. Sometimes I am inspired by the works of impressionist artists, architects, and object designers. Sometimes I get inspired by music. I always work with music.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
AL: Modern and monochrome, detailed, I like it.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
AL: I live near Moscow. Rather, my projects were influenced by foreign designers. In our country, landscape design is not very developed yet. I'm talking about the design. The Russians are a very conservative people and are wary of new materials, styles, and plants in their gardens. I mainly create projects for young and middle-aged couples who want to make an interesting and harmonious garden.

FS: How do you work with companies?
AL: I mainly create projects for young and middle-aged couples who want to make an interesting and harmonious garden.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
AL: You need to trust the designer and let him think and act freely, not drive him into the framework - then there will be a sense. The company and the designer should equally understand and feel the design, be on the same wavelength.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
AL: I take a plot plan, turn on minimal techno, and start drawing lines until something is drawn and transformed into some interesting concept.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
AL: Always on the move, from morning to evening

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
AL: Learn, learn, and learn! And don't be afraid.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
AL: There are no disadvantages to my work, I really like it.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
AL: The client is not always right, you need to be able to explain and convey the meaning of your design to the customer. Otherwise, if you do everything as he asks, why then the designer?

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
AL: Creativity, a sense of material, shape and color, the ability to combine all this, a sense of proportion and an understanding of beauty.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
AL: I work on a computer, use a lot of software for design and visualization, use various books, watch webinars. I also have a pencil case with pencils and markers :) First I make sketches by hand, and then I transfer them to an electronic form.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
AL: I don't put off work until later. I work every day seven days a week if possible.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
AL: Each project is unique, as is the customer. In different ways, from 3-4 weeks to 6 months.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
AL: Do you do all this yourself?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
AL: Everything I do is work-related. Every new book, webinar, every project and customer. All this is an invaluable experience.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
AL: I create projects for private gardens. They are mostly young and middle-aged couples.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
AL: Visualization, it is very revealing and interesting. At this stage, you can better think through the design details.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
AL: I plan to study light design.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
AL: I create the landscape project completely by myself.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
AL: Another one of my favorite projects - QuaD is currently under implementation, it will be completed this year.

FS: How can people contact you?
AL: Better by email info@aleksandralav.com
