Interview with BORD Architectural Studio Llc at Wednesday 2nd of May 2018
BORD Architectural Studio Llc
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
BASL: In fact I never had the intention to become one! As a child I started to draw my own house, and then I was told I can design it for real only in case I am an architect. My one and only goal was this and I planned to choose another profession after achieving it. Even when I started the Faculty of Architecture the possibility to design something for others seemed completely indifferent to me.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
BASL: Our firm offers services including general architectural- and interior design plans; we provide complete solutions from conceptual design to construction phases. Our aim is not only to offer perfect engineering services but also to satisfy our clients with the highest quality designs. In our studio the dreams of our commissioners can be embodied in especially unique buildings. The designer of the individual atmosphere of our creations is PETER BORDAS, founder and lead architect of BORD Studio, registered member with the Chamber of Hungarian Architects. A highly qualified, dynamic and creative team of architects and experienced engineers are liable for the precise, remarkably high level of services. We have an own team of mechanical engineers to guarantee sustainable design in our projects.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
BASL: It is Villányi Resort Hotel - a hospitality building in one of the most important wine producing regions of Hungary. However it hadn't been realized, it was the first project, in which we started to experiment how interior and exterior can be connected - or in other worlds how can we finish an inner space outside the building. Since then, this problem became one of the main questions for our studio.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
BASL: Actually it was Moonvalley winery, our first project to win an award at A'Design Award&Competition. Several years passed since then, but the design proved its lasting values - not only by its capability to function, but also by being enrolled as a winner project.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
BASL: All our projects have a different story, a guideline which provides a unique narrative or choreography for the building. This determines the concept, the main spatial system or the shape and volume. The story personalizes the design. Another main aspect which we are extremely interested in is the connection between interior and exterior.

FS: What makes a design successful?
BASL: All the clients asks for something new, however, deep down in their hearts they long for harmony and balance. When we design, sooner or later we know that it will be good. The hard part is to convince them in advance, before they could see it with their own eyes. It would be much easier to show the result in advance...

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
BASL: Modernism forced a global and uniformed architectural language, however in their souls people are preserving the traditions. Communities have their own milieau, which should be respected and integrated into the design instead of eliminating from it.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
BASL: I believe that the future of architecture is based on the individual needs of smaller communities, instead of the global design language used by everyone at the moment.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
BASL: The key is our sense of responsibility: as an architect it is crucial, as our design determine people's everyday life for decades. You can hang a painting into an other room, but what can you do with the room itself...?

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
BASL: Architecture - or design in general - depends mostly on psychology. If you are sensitive to the people you design for, then you are less likely to make mistakes.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
BASL: There are a few collegues in our studio considered as members of a group, called 'lifebelt', each able to substitute me in specific fields and decisions, supervising all the actual projects.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
BASL: Varies usually from 2 to 3 years from the first concept until the moment the client can move into the completed house. Building takes time.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
BASL: Our current projects vary from leisure and sport facilities, industrial buildings to offices and housing projects.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
BASL: We like multifunctional projects the most - the more complex needs it has to meet, the better for us. We like the challanges in such projects.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
BASL: In our studio, all our architects are design partners. Everyone feels the project and the design their own and I think it is very important.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
BASL: We have a few projects in parallel, however the biggest is the National Skating Centre of Hungary. It is a multifunctional facility with ice surfaces, swimming pool, offices and hotel on several floors. This complexity makes it really interesting for us.

FS: How can people contact you?
BASL: We are present in three locations. Our office is based in Budapest, Hungary, but we have a studio in Debrecen, Eastern Hungary and last year we opened another one in Zürich, Switzerland. The easiest way to contact us is through our website: http://www.bordstudio.hu/.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
