Interview with Edo Santoso at Tuesday 1st of May 2018

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
ES: Out of my love and great passion for wood, I have a graphic design background.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
ES: CASAKA - Wood & Living believes in the synergy of quality and aesthetics. Our collections include wooden furniture and various home/office decorations, all are made from Indonesian high-quality hardwood. We believe that furniture should serve both its function and its design and we always ensure each of our products is a one-of-a-kind artwork which is not only pleasant to the eye, but also long-lasting and sustainable.Every piece of wood we use, holds a unique story and characteristic of their own, and with a solid professional team and a “Never cease to learn and improve ourselves” attitude, completes our mission, to present the finest form of a wood, in a beautifully designed and crafted high-quality collection, to match our clients need.

FS: What is "design" for you?
ES: For me "design" is a form of way that channeling between our mind to people's sense of sight and touch, whether in a form of goods or art.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
ES: I am in furniture and accessories design for almost 5 years now. I like to design something that can put people in their comfort zone through my products through its aesthetic and functionality.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
ES: Arus, one of my dining table collection. Arus itself, is Indonesian word means flow, which generally this flowing gesture is also become the root of all my designs up until now.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
ES: Company's branding profile kit.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
ES: Being around and supported by a solid professional team, I feel creative at most of all time

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
ES: Other than aesthetic and functionality aspects, I am also focusing on people's comfort.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
ES: Since I am using various woods for my furniture, and so I would need to take some time to match the wood characteristic into my design, and the emotions and sensations generated would also vary.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
ES: Mostly happy, but with my overflowing ideas sometimes postpone the satisfaction, because my designs never stopped in a certain point, they were always evolving.

FS: What makes a design successful?
ES: When it is appreciated and understood by the viewers.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
ES: Whether the message the designer meant to give is successfully delivered through the design. And also probably on how big would the impact of the design be to the audience.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
ES: I think a designer's responsibilities are, to visualize an idea to be presented but also should think about how the result would impact the environment.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
ES: I think design, supported by vastly grow technologies nowadays, which automatically simplifies any process will always be evolving.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
ES: My last exhibition is at 2018 Salone del Mobile Milano, Milan, Italy. The next exhibition is still in planning, hopefully soon.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
ES: My inspirations came from anywhere, mostly came from the vary of Indonesian culture, which later become as my collection design theme. And also, my inspirations would come from the wood characteristics itself.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
ES: Up until now, my design style tends to have a "continuous" approach and characteristic, as it always intrigued and challenged me to explore more.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
ES: I live in Indonesia, which technically has rich of cultural heritages and philosophies And as Indonesian, I feel proud that I can bring them as my design themes and inspirations for my collections.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
ES: Usually I have a basic design drawing. And then I try to set what material that I am going to use. Since I am working with various kind of solid woods, which never have the same grains and personalities, I would always tend to study and explore more about the characteristics of the wood itself, the development would go and the grains of the wood that I intend to expose, to help me get the maximum result. And sometimes, in order to achieve that, I do not mind spending hours just to look at a piece of wood. And later then, these information, would help me perfect my design.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
ES: "A never cease to learn" and "always eager to improve ourselves" attitude are always the main key to have the best result.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
ES: Fantasizing.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
ES: My sketchbook and pencils are always with me anywhere I go, most of the time.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
ES: From my field and experience, it would depends on some aspects, characteristics and condition of wood used, which sometimes affect the development process.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
ES: Wood lover, hotels, solid wood furniture enthusiast.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
ES: I never stop to learn about wood, its richness.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
ES: I develop my designs concept myself, and have a solid professional team support me in visualizing and perfecting them.
