Interview with Ling Zhou at Saturday 21st of April 2018 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? LZ: I graduated from the Chongqing Architecture University in China. My hobby has always made me a dream of becoming a designer. It is my goal to become an excellent designer. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? LZ: My company is mainly to do business design, always want to see different excellent design FS: What is "design" for you? LZ: Think from the layout of the space, do some special space design FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? LZ: I like the work of business type best FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? LZ: I'd like to see it as long as it's a good work, but I'll like the fashion works FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? LZ: Design my own office FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? LZ: I like to use natural materials, such as wood and stone FS: When do you feel the most creative? LZ: It's very quiet at night FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? LZ: Function, beauty and practicality FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? LZ: Full and active FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? LZ: I'm going to be very excited and happy FS: What makes a design successful? LZ: Continuous learning FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? LZ: Function FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? LZ: Improve the value of the city and improve the awareness of environmental protection for more people FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? LZ: The diversified development of the design needs the designer to be more comprehensive. The future design will pay more attention to the people's sense of life experience and the protection of the environment. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? LZ: The latest exhibition is December 15, 2017, and my next exhibition is in the plan. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? LZ: The inspiration I designed came from all the possibilities of nature and life, and I would find different things from different objects to feed my creativity. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? LZ: I think the style of design should be changeable. I will not explore a certain style. Every style has commonality. I often find some common points in different styles in my design, and then I am optimizing them. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? LZ: I live in China, and the cultural heritage of China will have an impact on my design. I will integrate Chinese design into modern design, rather than influence. I would like to say that it is a cultural exchange and integration. FS: How do you work with companies? LZ: Cooperation with the company needs mutual trust and tolerance FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? LZ: The company needs to develop its own excellent designers and hire excellent designers. But I think the designer should be more proud of the company's honor. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? LZ: First observe the form of the building itself, and then make a preliminary configuration from the layout of the space, and finally choose the suitable material. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? LZ: Teacup, coffee cup, tableware, chair, bathtub FS: Can you describe a day in your life? LZ: Cherish every day with my family FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? LZ: Looking for inspiration from every small thing in life, young designers should break through traditional design thinking for different designs FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? LZ: For me, more is a positive side, actively enjoy life, active design FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? LZ: Standing at a different point of view is the golden rule of my design FS: What skills are most important for a designer? LZ: observation FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? LZ: AutoCAD,Adobe Photoshop,Google SketchUp,Design Magazine FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? LZ: Schedule allocation time in advance FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? LZ: 2 months FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? LZ: The attitude and pursuit of life FS: What was your most important job experience? LZ: The experience of working in the first company FS: Who are some of your clients? LZ: Business manager, business operation director FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? LZ: The type of business space will give me more imagination FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? LZ: The future hopes to be able to do some representative design FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
