Interview with Dominika Zawojska-Kuriata at Saturday 18th of February 2023
Dominika Zawojska-Kuriata
FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
DZ: My design activity started while I was a bachelor's student, around 2012. It lasts until now.

FS: What is "design" for you?
DZ: It is a constant search, checking, sometimes returning to the beginning.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
DZ: Interiors, public utility is what turns me on. Responding to the needs of various recipients.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
DZ: Combining design with art. Very often these are reactive projects that react to movement and sound. This is a kind of art that I like very much.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
DZ: A small architectural form for outdoor space, serving relaxation.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
DZ: I like to work with the form in paper, at the beginning. Also a pencil and a piece of paper, a felt-tip pen, without which there is no beginning of the project. The computer comes later.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
DZ: In the morning, very early between 7.00 and 11.00.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
DZ: Function and form.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
DZ: It's hard to describe, it's a kind of indescribable excitement, sometimes curiosity about what will happen next.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
DZ: Satisfaction with carrying out the overall process.

FS: What makes a design successful?
DZ: Focusing on it while designing, taking care of every detail, which in turn makes up the whole.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
DZ: Sometimes I pay attention to an additional aspect to the function and appearance of the form. From time to time it's good when a project has an inexplicable "something" and also faults about some problem.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
DZ: In these times, I think that it will be primarily an ecological aspect, and it is also good for designers to think about the mental condition of the population after the pandemic, it is good to create places or objects that will help in some way.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
DZ: My last individual exhibition took place in the Filharmonic named Mieczysław Karlowicz in Szczecin, the next one will be held at the Museum of Technology and Communication Zajezdnia Sztuki.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
DZ: Most often, probably by nature, my inspirations are very often unexpected, they come from different directions, they are probably the result of in-depth reflection on a given task or design problem.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
DZ: I live in Poland, in the countryside next to the city where I work. Of course, when it comes to architecture, it is impossible to design without reference to a given context. Poland is a country where more and more good architecture is created, at an ever-higher level, of course there is still a lot to do, primarily in changing the awareness of.

FS: How do you work with companies?
DZ: On a partnership basis. We are equal, we learn from each other.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
DZ: My day usually looks like I wake up around 10am. At 6.00 am I embrace everyone, i.e. my daughter, myself, the dog and we are getting ready with my husband to go to work at the university, and our daughter to school. We fulfill academic duties with students, but also administrative ones, it is our second home. Later, after work, when we pick up our daughter, we have time together, when our daughter goes to sleep, we start designing.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
DZ: Peace of mind, you need peace to design. It's not mine, so our house friend Andreas Guskos said, but it has become our maxim.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
DZ: Patience in testing your own concepts, later technical skills and theoretical knowledge.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
DZ: I am organized. Sometimes I have a poor work-life balance. Work sometimes wins.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
DZ: It depends on how extensive the project is and whether it is a concept or a job for a client.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
DZ: Working on my PhD project. It was a big challenge that turned out to be a great success. There was a lot of talk about the project.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
DZ: Usually young people who are increasingly aware of the importance of good design.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
DZ: The initial stage, conceptual, where I give vent to my design fantasies, I am looking for solutions, but also the final stage when refining the visualization, when you can see the effect of my work.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
DZ: Next is always learning new techniques, discovering and implicating in your own art and design. Constant learning.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
DZ: I usually work alone, there are occasional group projects.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
DZ: At the moment, he is designing the space of a single-family house near Poznań. This is actually a group project.

FS: How can people contact you?
DZ: Online or by phone. You can find me on the web.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
