Interview with Stephan Maria Lang at Monday 21st of May 2018 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? SML: my life is a creative flow i was thrown into FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? SML: Stephan Maria Lang architects is a full-service design firm whose work includes residences (often for art collectors), museums and exhibition design, hospitality projects, commercial design, interior design and garden design, The firm is led by the founder Stephan Maria LangThe quality and beauty of Stephan Maria Lang's works lay in hidden details, in the surprising views, in the play of light and shadow, and in the integration of landscape, garden, and interior into a Gesamtkunstwerk, an integrated and holistic masterpiece of architecture. FS: What is "design" for you? SML: to create a whole world, an island of harmony for my clients to recover from a tough world FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? SML: Villa and Museum FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? SML: House p at lake ammer a huge volume intimate and comfortable in tune with nature FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? SML: a hand rail FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? SML: i love to use simple natural materials in a sophisticated way FS: When do you feel the most creative? SML: i the first moment of my initial sketches FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? SML: anything from frustration to ultimate joy FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? SML: a the end it is like creating children and let them go in a better world FS: What makes a design successful? SML: a happy client with a glow in his eye FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? SML: if it touches my soul instantly love it FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? SML: no ego but green architecture would solve a lot of problems FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? SML: minimal and natural FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? SML: i collect and select over a long period the finest craftsmen from whom i learn a lot FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? SML: you exploit yourself in the most exciting job until you drop dead. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? SML: do not copy avoid trendy tendencies FS: What skills are most important for a designer? SML: do not copy paste open your eyes and invent something only you have discovered FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? SML: go with the flow and take care of your self FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? SML: from 2 weeks design period to 2 years of completing a project FS: What was your most important job experience? SML: to survive a business partner FS: Who are some of your clients? SML: all private clients, sucessfull in their job FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? SML: private residences with interior and garden design i like to work with a one to one situation in the design decision process FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? SML: working till 85 with all the fun i can have FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
