Interview with Kokutou Uemori at Monday 19th of March 2018 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? KU: My living environment made the architect's path to be chosen. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? KU: A small number of staff, now there are many houses and store designs. FS: What is "design" for you? KU: Unification by ultimate sensitivity to what was formed by logic and inevitability. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? KU: Wood, glass, concrete FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? KU: Narrow house "8 1/2" FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? KU: When unforeseeable deployment was presented. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? KU: Sense of accomplishment. FS: What makes a design successful? KU: Cooperation of stakeholders. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? KU: Overall impression. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? KU: Be ecological. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? KU: Characteristics of site and client's way of thinking. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? KU: To make my current style or change. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? KU: Japan. It is affected. Unfortunately I have not accepted big criticism or approval. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? KU: The pleasure of building being built by my responsibility. Responsibility when I did not go well. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? KU: A deep understanding and interest in culture, politics, and societ. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? KU: There are many from 6 to 12 months. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? KU: Both. FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
