Interview with Wai Ching Chan at Monday 1st of May 2017

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
WCC: I started my first design education on 2009 which is a study in Advertising and Graphic Design. After I get into design industry six years, I have work in a different in-house and design house. During this six years, I realized that I love to do branding because branding is the first things to connect the audience, It's can affect the feeling, Integrity of the company. I have never though that I will be a designer. I choose to study in graphic design because I love to read graphic/image more than text.

FS: What is "design" for you?
WCC: Communication. Through design communicate with different people.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
WCC: Logo

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
WCC: N&E Audio Logo, not because it won a design award because it is the deepest relation of the brands. Also visually can deliver the strong message.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
WCC: Design Books, Google, Behance

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
WCC: When I am relaxing, that's the most creative.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
WCC: Research.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
WCC: I feel excited during the design process.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
WCC: I feel delighted when my designs were realized.

FS: What makes a design successful?
WCC: Clearly to communicate with the audience.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
WCC: Concept. Are concepts can precisely deliver the core message that you wanted to achieve?

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
WCC: I went to Hong Kong Art Basel's this year.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
WCC: Most of the times I use Google, Behance, and Pinterest to do my research. Also, I through my daily lives to find inspiration.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
WCC: My design style is more luxury and high-end.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
WCC: I live in Hong Kong. Is one of fastest growing cities in the world, the culture affects my designs at the beginning of my career. Hong Kong design style is quick design; no need much conceptual design because there's no time for you to develop. Also, most people think you know how to use Illustration, Photoshop that you can be a designer. In the beginning, most of my work was very commercial and empty. As I notice that my design is not design, just a picture, so I tried to explore foreign design and read more about design books to improve my design.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
WCC: If the design is no meaning, it's not a design, do not send out.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
WCC: Creativity

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
WCC: iMac, Wacom, Adobe CC, Headphone, Google

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
WCC: I will use my traffic time to brainstorm the ideas, once I got any idea, which I can continue my design when I back to the office or home.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
WCC: The one I worked in Face World Wide design agency. The creative director reminded me how to be a better designer. Also, In this company, I can get collaborate with some high-end brands, so that I can try a different type of design. It really helps in my career path.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
WCC: TAL Apparel Limited, Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
WCC: Branding. The design process of branding is so much fun because it is so many possibilities to explore.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
WCC: I wanted to find a brand design agency job, try to work in a large company so that I can try work with a team.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
WCC: Most of the time I develop the designs by myself.
