Interview with DesignNest at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? D: I have always wanted to be a designer! I spent six year gaining industrial design experience at Dong Hua University, graduating in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. There are various problems encountered in people's daily life, and a lot of problems can be and should be solved. Solving problems is the goal for us as designers. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? D: Allocacoc was founded in 2010 by Arthur Limpens and Yixia Jiang, two Industrial Design graduates from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. Allocacoc stands for setting a different standard. They are also helping other designers develop their ideas into products to be sold in the market through our crowdfunding platform called DesignNest. This is a one-of-a-kind crowdfunding platform that provides design knowledge, sourcing, production, and assembly together with distribution and sales. FS: What is "design" for you? D: Pooling resources and solving problems in an appropriate way. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? D: Simple products that people often use in their daily lives, which will improve their lifestyle. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? D: MUJI Wall-mounted CD machine. It is a kind of metaphor in an interactive and visual perspective, which makes people feel that music flows like the wind. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? D: LightCube FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? D: Wood/Pinterest/Physics! FS: When do you feel the most creative? D: When I encounter a problem that needs to be solved! FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? D: I ask myself, what problems can this design solve? FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? D: Excited, happy, driven FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? D: Happiness! The fact that my product can bring convenience and fun to more people. FS: What makes a design successful? D: When the design can solve problems effectively FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? D: Can it solve the problem effectively? FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? D: I believe that industrial designers have the mission to solve a variety of problems, to help people have a better life, a better environment and even a better world. Making a better product is a one of the best ways to solve the problems associated with people daily lives, and I enjoy it very much. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? D: More personalized and diversified design forms FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? D: Hongkong Lighting Fair ,Spring 2017. HongKong ,CN. I would want to hold my next exhibition anywhere if my product received an invitation. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? D: I am very sensitive to the various problems encountered in people's daily life, and I feel that a lot of problems can be solved. I want to solve those problems in the way designers do. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? D: In fact, this is my first mass production product, I am willing to use “concise” and “practical” to describe it.
