Interview with Isa Velarde at Thursday 27th of April 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? IV: I am a design engineer. Yes, since I was very young I wanted to be a designer, to create and be an active part of today’s culture. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? IV: I am a designer at Joel Escalona Studio, a multidisciplinary design studio, where I work with the most skilled designers in Mexico. FS: What is "design" for you? IV: Design for me is the meeting point between thorough technical knowledge and aesthetical sensibility. A way of approaching people’s lives and shaping today’s culture. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? IV: Those that create an experience. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? IV: A bookshelf. I was very excited, it was both fascinating and challenging at the same time. It was the first time I was designing for a real client with its own vision of design and real requirements. The challenge was because it was important to understand the client’s market and language, to then make a proposal that worked for them but also keeping an original essence. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? IV: I believe the materials that intrigue me the most are memory shape alloys. However I do believe that each material has its own language and each project has specific needs, thus my predilection in materials goes in function of the needs of the project. FS: When do you feel the most creative? IV: Late at night listening to music. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? IV: That it satisfies the stated objectives with an interesting approach. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? IV: To understand that we as designers are somehow going into people's lives and shaping the contemporary culture of the places our work is used, also that our work has an impact and that is a big responsibility. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? IV: I am a literature lover, I believe art in any of its representations widens one's perspective. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? IV: I live in Mexico. I believe our cultural heritage and context always permeates in the way we behave, even in the way we think, therefore is natural that our designs have hints of this. And I see this as a positive aspect that allows design to so diverse and rich. My country for example has a very strong cultural background, and I see that as something very positive. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? IV: Always keep your goals in mind, develop a strong opinion, pursue what truly makes you happy and always have a plan. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? IV: My golden rule in design is to always have your objectives in mind, what is the purpose of what you are designing, to not lose track of that. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? IV: The most frequently asked question I think it would be about my every day as a designer. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? IV: At the studio we work as a team, however for this, since it is a personal design I worked by myself. FS: How can people contact you? IV: You can write me an email to isa.velarde3@gmail.com or follow me on instagram isa.velarder
