Interview with Hexagón at Wednesday 26th of April 2017

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
H: Hexagón is a Design Studio and registered trademark founded by two Mexican industrial designers, it’s focused on geometric abstraction and manipulation, using innovative technics and technologies, transforming everyday-objects into functional art pieces. Its goal is to position itself as leader in quality, aesthetics and innovation at an international level.

FS: What is "design" for you?
H: Is everything that serves as a tool to project a creative idea in real life

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
H: We prefer interior products that not only are beautiful but more importantly functional.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
H: Probably our wine cellar, its made of natural wood and computerized cut. It is meant for young couples who want to decorate their living place while storing their wine in the best way posible.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
H: A first aid kit

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
H: Material probably wood, platform SolidWorks, technology anything that includes precision cutting (laser, water, CNC, etc)

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
H: Probably while dreaming or at any given time during the day a crazy idea might come to mind, we later analyze and develop some of this ideas.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
H: Functionality and aesthetics

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
H: Frustration and then relief

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
H: We feel very proud

FS: What makes a design successful?
H: Team work and perseverance

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
H: Function, technology, quality and aesthetics

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
H: Its our obligation to create things that contribute to our society thats why for us function is so important

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
H: We are becoming better for our environment and also technology helps to create things

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
H: It was at Milan, Ventura district this past April 2017. Our next exhibition will be at the World Trade Center Mexico City on May 2017

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
H: Geometry, math, usually sculpture and art are our best inspiration

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
H: I don't think we can settle ourselves into one particular style but you would se through all our designs that they are assembled, geometric and symmetric

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
H: We live in México, the pros of living here are that design has been getting stronger and respected through the last decades, the cons are that most people don't value the complexity of design and this often makes it difficult to sell.

FS: How do you work with companies?
H: We have had good experiences with companies although we prefer working independently

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
H: Understand what is it that you're trying to solve before going to the designer.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
H: Its a very long process, it all begins with an idea that then becomes a brainstorm, sometimes the ideas are completely shifted from what they were supposed to be at the beginning, then comes sketching, drafting, rendering, prototyping, experimenting, polishing and finally selling

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
H: Bookshelf, Hexagon winecellar, Hexagon Stool, Alessi wineopener, Zaha Hadid's miniature yacht model

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
H: Wake, work, exercise, repeat

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
H: We ourselves are really young, our best advice would be start now! Don't waste anytime, everyday is experience gained, and to be a great designer you need tons of that

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
H: You are able to create almost anything with enough dedication, I don't think there are any negatives if you put all your effort in what you love.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
H: Don't quit

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
H: For us is teamwork and software

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
H: SolidWorks, Vray, Autocad, Illustrator, Design books, Architecture books

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
H: Well you need to have priorities, sometimes finishing a design is the priority so we'll sleep really few hours between days.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
H: 2-5 months

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
H: Can you make a cheaper version?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
H: Working

FS: Who are some of your clients?
H: Business offices, architects

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
H: Remodeling is one of our favorite jobs because we get to see an entire space become something different, hopefully better

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
H: Evolve the complexity of our products

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
H: As a team

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
H: We are in the middle of collaborations with designers in Italy and India, stay posted
