Interview with Torres Arquitetos at Monday 6th of January 2025
Alberto Torres
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
TA: I have a degree in Architecture and Urbanism, and my journey has always been driven by creativity and a passion for transforming spaces. Since I was a child, I loved drawing and imagining how environments could be improved, so becoming a designer felt natural.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
TA: My studio, Torres Arquitetos, specializes in high-standard residential and commercial projects. We aim to combine creativity, modernity, and functionality, delivering unique spaces tailored to our clients’ visions.

FS: What is "design" for you?
TA: Design is a bridge between aesthetics, functionality, and human experience. It’s about creating purposeful solutions that improve people’s lives and connect them emotionally to spaces.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
TA: I enjoy designing spaces that combine elegance and practicality, especially residential projects where I can deeply connect with the clients’ needs and transform their daily lives.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
TA: One of my favorites was the Le Dune Residential, where we incorporated natural light, sustainable materials and a volume on a human scale.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
TA: The first project I developed was a small cabin surrounded by nature.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
TA: I love working with natural wood for its warmth and versatility, and I frequently use BIM software like Revit for precise and collaborative designs.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
TA: I feel most creative in the early mornings or late at night when the world is quiet, and I can focus without distractions.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
TA: I focus on the balance between aesthetics, functionality, and the emotional impact of the space.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
TA: I feel a mix of excitement and serenity, like solving a puzzle while bringing beauty to the project.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
TA: I feel very proud and satisfied, especially when I see the positive impact the project has on the lives of clients and the city.

FS: What makes a design successful?
TA: A successful design is one that fulfills its purpose, connects with users, and stands the test of time.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
TA: I first consider its functionality, followed by how well it integrates with its environment and its overall aesthetic.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
TA: Designers have a responsibility to create sustainable, inclusive, and accessible solutions that improve communities and respect the planet.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
TA: The field is embracing sustainability, technology, and personalization. The future lies in integrating smart solutions with environmentally conscious designs.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
TA: The last exhibition we participated in was Rigenera, curated by the Brazilian Institute of Architects in the city of Curitiba.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
TA: I draw inspiration from nature, architecture history, and travel. Visiting new places and studying diverse cultures fuel my creativity.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
TA: My style is modern, elegant, and functional. It’s driven by a desire to create spaces that are timeless and uniquely personal.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
TA: I live in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The rich cultural heritage influences my designs through the use of natural materials and appreciation for local craftsmanship. The main challenge is balancing creativity with budget constraints.

FS: How do you work with companies?
TA: I work collaboratively, ensuring a deep understanding of their brand identity and goals to deliver designs that reflect their essence.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
TA: Companies should prioritize designers who listen, communicate clearly, and have a portfolio that aligns with their vision.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
TA: My process begins with understanding the client’s needs, researching the site, and brainstorming concepts. From there, I move to sketches, 3D modeling, and detailed project development.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
TA: A statement armchair, minimalist light fixtures, a handmade ceramic vase, a geometric rug, and custom shelving.

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
TA: My day starts early with coffee and planning. I spend mornings designing and attending meetings, afternoons visiting project sites, and evenings reflecting on concepts or sketching ideas.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
TA: Stay curious, always learn, and don’t fear making mistakes. Collaborate, and most importantly, develop your own unique voice in design.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
TA: The positives are creativity and the ability to transform spaces. The negatives are tight deadlines and balancing client expectations.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
TA: Design with purpose and authenticity.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
TA: Critical thinking, creativity, communication, and adaptability.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
TA: Revit, AutoCAD, Anscape

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
TA: I use project management tools and break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to stay on track.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
TA: It depends on the complexity, but usually between a few months and a year.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
TA: Can you make this fit within my budget without compromising the quality?

FS: What was your most important job experience?
TA: Collaborating on a large-scale residential project that challenged me creatively and technically.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
TA: Private homeowners, real estate developers, and commercial brands looking for innovative spaces.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
TA: I enjoy residential projects because of the personal connection and impact they have on daily life.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
TA: To expand Torres Arquitetos’ portfolio with more sustainable and cutting-edge projects.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
TA: I work with a talented team, combining our skills to create the best solutions.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
TA: Yes, a high-end residential building that integrates green technologies and modern aesthetics.

FS: How can people contact you?
TA: Through our website or Instagram profile, @torresarquitetos.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
TA: Design is more than a profession for me; it’s a way of seeing the world and creating meaningful connections.
