Interview with Ellen Zhu at Tuesday 1st of November 2016 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? EZ: I am a visual artist and visual communication designer, currently completing my postgraduate design degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. My Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts at The University of New South Wales (UNSW ART & Design) was completed in Sydney. I consider myself as a mixed-media artist. At the age of two, I followed my family immigrated to Australia in 1996. In the beginning, before I completely mastered both Chinese and English, drawing was the way foe me to communicate with others, I think from this point laid my future to study art and design. My Australia identity and China heritage strongly influenced my art and design practices. FS: What is "design" for you? EZ: To me "design" is the language to communicate and express identity to others. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? EZ: I like to engage with art related categories of crossover design. Working in different areas can motivate and inspire my design. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? EZ: The depth of the design's embedded value. It is important to focus on the aesthetic aspect for a design, but at the same time a design without any connotation and meaning is nothing. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? EZ: I feel like Returning to the simplicity of natural purity. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? EZ: I feel greatful FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? EZ: individual uniqueness FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? EZ: I think it is important to deliver positive energy to the public. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? EZ: Complete my masters degree and develop more good designs. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
