Interview with Shan Lu

Home > Designer Interviews > Shan Lu

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Shan Lu (SL) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Shan Lu by clicking here.

Interview with Shan Lu at Wednesday 26th of April 2017

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
SL: I am originally a software engineer, and started Memo Box project while I was in Cambridge University, wanting to solve a problem of my mum not remembering whether she had taken her meds or not. In order to actualize Memo Box and its app, Memo Health, I taught myself with industrial and mobile app design. I have been awarded with reddot award and iF Design Award with my design for Memo Box hardware. Winning A’ Design Award with the accompanying Memo Health App, is really a pleasant surprise for us, and great recognition for our efforts in software design.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
SL: Tinylogics is revolutionising the way the world addresses the growing problem of medication non-adherence, which causes up to 50 % of treatment failures. By harnessing the potential of the Internet of Things and smart algorithm, we pioneer the development of smart pillboxes and its seamless integration with mobile app to empower users to overcome their adherence challenges and reduce overall healthcare expenses. We are founded in the University City of Cambridge in 2014, and have been receiving support from Cambridge Enterprise, Kickstarter backer community, and industry top manufacturers.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
SL: A great product is one that optimizes functionality, design and cost-efficiency, and I design with this goal in mind, so that I could build a product that I am willing to and happy to use, and a product that can benefit as many people as possible. For example, with my hardware design of Memo Box Smart Pillbox, I have used shaft to house all the electronic components to create an overall form of Memo Notebook, which combines reliable functionality with beautiful design, that does not always remind people around a user that he/she is on medication.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
SL: A good designer should always be thinking about the externalities, and do not waste resources is the least the one can do with his design and work.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
SL: Good design is the combination of idea and practice, and it should always combine function with form, innovation with cost-efficiency.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
