Interview with Baris Bumin at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? BB: I have graduated from department of Industrial Design in Middle East Technical University, in 2016. I have always wanted to be a designer because creating new products is so satisfactory. FS: What is "design" for you? BB: Design is an aesthetics way of problem solving in terms of production. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? BB: I really like to work on various projects without exception because every projects teach you different things. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? BB: You have not seen my favorite design yet, so I want show it to you next year instead of telling about it. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? BB: It was an office furniture for young generation. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? BB: I think that 3d printing technology is an eye-opening for designers FS: When do you feel the most creative? BB: There is no special time for that FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? BB: Combining form and function. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? BB: I feel exiceted like a kid with a new toy. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? BB: I am really proud of it FS: What makes a design successful? BB: It is important to understand customer needs and responding that with your design for success FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? BB: First, I ask if it is convenient for production and properties of selected material. Another key point is that form of product should reflect its function and novelty. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? BB: Designers should not forget their responsibilities towards nature, so they should prefer eco-friendly materials and less harmful production techniques for nature. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? BB: Most people will have their own workshop at home with the spread of 3d printers, so this situation would encourage people to design new products to respond their needs. Thus, people will become more creative and free. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? BB: My last exhibition was at my university, in Turkey about my gratuation project. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? BB: Observing everything in nature is the best source of creaativity and inspirations for me. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? BB: I attach more importance to integrate new function to product according to customer needs, and form the product with this function. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? BB: Companies should find designers who know how to produce a product at least as well as how to draw it. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? BB: Modeling and rendering programs. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? BB: It depends on project. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? BB: To reach a lot of people all around the world with my designs FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? BB: I have been working as a team for a while
