Interview with Ching, Wing Sing at Tuesday 10th of March 2020
Kevin Ching
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CWS: I love designs. I always want to be a designer. I did not study design when I was in University. However, I have different experience in different fields, including aviation, eyewear, and fashion. I always mix them together to create my new products.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CWS: I worked in Manufacturing company for eyewear. Therefore, I have to review different eyewear designs, learn the eyewear construction and structures, and its production process in daily. Also, I have to discuss different projects with different eyewear designers in different countries.

FS: What is "design" for you?
CWS: Design means creative and comfortable. Now, many people just follow popular designs for making their own designs. However, it is same or very similar as the one on other brand. Customers feel that there has no choice for them. It is the reason why I tried to make the creative designs for market. However, it should be good for them to wear with comfortable. Otherwise, they will not want to buy.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CWS: I do a lot of designs for sunglasses. It is because many people love sunglasses. Also, sunglasses designs could be more flexible than optical frames. People could accept the trend and fashion designs for sunglasses, but they are difficult to accept to have creative designs for optical frames. It is the info as I got from the markets and my research.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CWS: My first collection is "owl" which is my most favorite design. When I launched it and presented in the show, I found many people love it. It attracted many eyes from the markets. Also, this is my first design for my brand, and it brought the first design award for me. It motivated me to do more designs. It is the reason why I started to design more 2 styles (i.e. Hooter and Screech Owl) for the markets. In this project, I got much satisfaction.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CWS: "Owl" model is my first product for my brand. It brought the first International Design Awards for me.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CWS: Acetate and titanium is favorite materials that I always use. Acetate always have different pattern and colors. It could make my designs as more colorful and fruitful. About titanium, I like that it is light weight. Eyewear always wear on the face. If the weight is light, people feel more comfortable.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
CWS: I want to design what I think for people after doing the search and estimating coming trend. I want to design more different designs and creative designs for markets. It was because the market was too dull. Many brands have same or similar design, because that kind of designs are popular always. As a result, I tried to bring more new things for the markets that people could have a choice.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CWS: I focus on lifestyle, human, and fashion. It is because I feel that these elements are very important for people, not only on designs.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CWS: I always visit different fashion show and read fashion magazine for getting the inspiration. Sometime, I get the ideas when watching TV. For example, my first design and brand logo were come from Discovery TV programme. After watching this programme, there has many animals in my mind. Therefore, I started to use animals (e.g. owl and tiger) for my first two collections' design concept. As a result, I made the animals styles for the fashion creative collections. My designs feeling always come suddenly. It come when I have different feeling, including happy and sad. Such feelings always bring me to different senses, and make different creative or stylish products.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
CWS: I am happy and appreciation when my designs are realized. As a designer, I always want to design the right things for people. It motivates me to make more designs for them. This is the synergy on me for making more designs.

FS: What makes a design successful?
CWS: I always get the inspiration from different channels. Firstly, I read fashion magazine and visit different fashion news website. Secondly, I join different fashion show. Thirdly, I talk and discuss with different fashion designers to estimate the trend. Fourthly, I get the last info and materials info from different suppliers. Lastly, I get some opinions from fashionista. After that, I will consolidate all data, and estimate the trend for my designs. It could make a design successful.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
CWS: As judging designs, I will consider about the design concept. If the design has no design concept, nobody will know why you designed that.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
CWS: I always assist young fashion designers to style with my eyewear for their fashion catwalk show. Also, I always assist the students to make prototype, and provide some my opinions to them for their designs. I hope they know more, and will not do the mistakes on their designs. It is because some design structure is limited which it cannot produce. If they have such knowledge, they could produce what they design. Moreover, I always donate money to Orbis (NGO) when I sold my products via website. Of course, I always do the personal donation in every month for Orbis too.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
CWS: Design field is starting to look for the bio-materials. Many people feel that environmental protection is very important. Therefore, they will find some products as made by bio-materials with creative design. In other words, they are not only focusing on designs. They will focus on the environment protection too.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
CWS: My last exhibition is in Malaysia. I introduced my design and products to the celebrities in Malaysia, including the Queen in Malaysia, Prince in Cambodia, and Professor Jimmy Choo respectively. Now, I am planning the next exhibition in Hong Kong in November.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CWS: I always get the inspiration from different channels. Firstly, I read fashion magazine and visit different fashion news website. Secondly, I join different fashion show. Thirdly, I talk and discuss with different fashion designers to estimate the trend. Fourthly, I get the last info and materials info from different suppliers. Lastly, I get some opinions from fashionista. After that, I will consolidate all data, and estimate the trend for my designs.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
CWS: My style is creative. The temple tip design is the main characteristics on my designs. The tip end is more thick, and install my brand 3D metal logo. It is caused to wear with comfortable.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
CWS: I live in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is not big city, however, there has different culture. The pros is "I could learn different culture". The cons is "The culture is changed coz of mixture. I am difficult to find the history and story. Therefore, I love travel. During travel, I always search their culture, arts, designs, and history. In addition, I have different knowledge and experience in different fields and industries, including aviation, eyewear, and fashion. I help my designs very much now.

FS: How do you work with companies?
CWS: I become eyewear designer, because I worked in eyewear industry. I always meet different eyewear designers and the people from eyewear industry for the OEM projects, because I worked in the manufacturing company for producing eyewear to all my customers. During the meeting, we always exchange the designs and structure ideas. It motivated me to design and develop my eyewear. Therefore, I tried to create my brand with my own designs since Year 2011. My first design is named "Owl". This style is very fancy and creative. After launching that, it attracted many people to find. Also, many people love that, especially celebrities and style house in U.S.A. It confirmed my designs and recognized what I did. It motivated me to design more and more.I studied Business Management, not design. Therefore, I would hope to recognize by the official design associations that it could confirm me as designer. As a result, I participated in 'A' Design Awards. Luckily, my designs had been recognized by the jury panels. It is very appreciated.

In other words, you should work hard on every designs project with confidence. If not, you will give it up easily.

CWS: In the new generation, we have to search more data for our designs, including both commercial or non-commercial info. As designers, you must have many many ideas to do the different things and products. However, such ideas may not be recognized by others. It is because such things or products are not their needs.
