Interview with Yiyuan Ding at Thursday 6th of April 2017 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? YD: I am a junior designer, and was graduated from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in China. And nowtime, I am staying in IItaly for further researching and studying for the Graphic Deasign. When I was watching a exhibition about posters, I have gotten the interests of Graphic Design. I want to be a designer and can use the ways by myself to create more works to present my options and views about the world. FS: What is "design" for you? YD: "Design " is like a tool for me to show my thoughts and how I see the world. I can make some posters or some libraries and show it in public to make people pay more attention to the problems of the environment and the war and also the equal right of the human. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? YD: I like design posters and libraries in the part of art. In commerce,I often accept some works about visuals identifying of the brands. FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? YD: My favorite design is “Basilica of Saint Mary of The Flower”. The colour of architecture is romantic and dreamlike. It is incredible. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? YD: The first thing I designed for the company is a logo. The brand is for a shop of lamps. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? YD: My favorite technology is the silk print technology. After the print the color is staturated,bright and beautiful. FS: When do you feel the most creative? YD: At night there isn't anyone beside me. At that time, I can think about the ideals more clearly. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? YD: I am more concerned about the spirit behind the design. Such spiritual expression is meaningful. Such as social issues, political topics and some others which could catch the conversations. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? YD: The design itself will strengthen my concern of social issues, but also I feel that they makes me have more responsibility to do more and better design, such as about public welfare, to promote this society to become better. FS: What makes a design successful? YD: A successful design must to be formal and connotative. At first glance can attract the people's attention, and the second can cause people to think about what it's about. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? YD: Design is developing with the development of the times, this is a step forward. In the future may be more design will appear in the virtual reality environment. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? YD: Till now my last exhibition was held in Xi'an China. That was an exhibition of graduation design. I want to hold my next exhibition near the years later. Because I need to relax and save the energy to creativities works. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? YD: The inspiration came from the daily life. It was the experience of the days which had been passed. I often travel anround the world to watch the exhibition of design and take pictures of the nature interesting. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? YD: My design style will not be particularly simple, I prefer some complicated graphics. I love the mandala of India and some religious patterns. I will do a lot of sketches before making the design, and finally choose the most appropriate and then make the final look. FS: How do you work with companies? YD: First, the company will tell me what their needs. I will be based on their requirements and practical needs, and make a series of research for the case. And ultimately the formation of a customer needs and the market needs will be explain in the report. Then I will give the company three design options to communicate with them. The company's most appreciated program will be taken out. It will be focused on discussion, modification and improvement. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? YD: Both the company and the designer need the patience. When a company selects a designer, it need to understand if the designer's offer and his ability are in match, and in the process of cooperation you two could be stay in a good communication. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? YD: Young designers need more patience to accumulate their own works. Because the designers' ability will be shown in the work. They can go to take part in some games to test their own works. At the same time they also need to know more first-hand design information and look at other good designs. In life, they also need to material accumulation.
