FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
SA: 1. I got into the design realm by coincident, and then I understood the power of self-expression through design and making.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
SA: 2. I am a newly graduate. El_Masnad was my thesis design study.

FS: What is "design" for you?
SA: 3. Design is empowerment.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
SA: 5. I love to explore the concept of floor as living space and make more fun Lounge Carpets.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
SA: 5. I love to explore the concept of floor as living space and make more fun Lounge Carpets.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
SA: 7. I am interested in computational design. I am now advancing my scripting skills using the famous Grasshopper software for Algorithmic Aided Design. I was exploring a lot with it,and actually, the stitching pattern on El_Masnad is an artistic representation of graph of information. Specifically, it is about Saudi women.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
SA: 8. At 3:00 a.m. weather in my dreams or awake.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
SA: 9. I try to focus on the Human-Centered aspects, and I try not to neglect, as much as possible, the environmental friendly aspects.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
SA: 10. Meditative

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
SA: 11. Humbled

FS: What makes a design successful?
SA: 12. For my designs, I think when it can give back to community and culture.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
SA: 13. Appearance

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
SA: 15. Smart material and programming.

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
SA: The last one was Grand Design Exhibition Bologna Design Week. The next one, is Decofair in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
SA: 17. Nature, people, trends and Zaha Hadid.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
SA: 19. I live in L.A. a wonderful place, However, I grew up in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Awonderful place too, no doubt. I loved it.

FS: How do you work with companies?
SA: 20. I haven’t yet.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
SA: 23. My travelling bag, wii, my mascara packaging design, how my bed positioned so I can see the full moon at 10 p.m. every month

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
SA: 25. Do not stay up late, if you figured out how, teach me!

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
SA: 26. Cons, Staying up late. Pros, finding your own independent voice.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
SA: 27. Stay up late, I don’t know other way :P

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
SA: Research and analytical abilities.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
SA: 29. First, Sugar. Rhino, Grasshopper – Photoshop.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
SA: 30. I don’t, I just isolate myself from people.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
SA: It depends.

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
SA: 32. “Which color should I pick for my bedroom?”

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
SA: The work that has a balance between the physical, like in making, and the intellectual, like in coming up with the concept.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
SA: I do'n have plans yet.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
SA: I work by myself, however, I look forward to meet other designer and team up with them in fun group projects.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
SA: I am currently working on a small, but fun job. I am creating an interactive design for a Partí™ in an architectural conference to show case their patterning abilities.
