Interview with Min-Bum SEO (BUMI) at Monday 23rd of February 2015 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? MS: Since my childhood, drawing was one only thing i enjoyed. At home, at school, on the wall, on the floor wherever i go i kept expressing my thoughts and feelings through lines and colors. Nobody couldn't stop me from drawing. So automatically, my feet led me to design where i can have an endless happiness. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? MS: It's a small but strong design atelier where i pursuit my happiness. FS: What is "design" for you? MS: Freedom and Joy FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? MS: Furnitures FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? MS: My favorite design is french modern design style like A.P.C shops' interiors. Their shops have not any limits between interior design and furnitures. It means they don't complete the shops with furnitures to expose their cloths but the furnitures become the space to create an intimacy between their cloths and interior designs. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? MS: It was an interior design concept for a restaurant. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? MS: Wood is my favorite materials. FS: When do you feel the most creative? MS: When one of my design users says "This design is timeless, I could see myself using the same design 50 years later" FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? MS: Every single design must have multifunctional aspects. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? MS: I feel like i'm on drugs. I laugh, talk, get angry etc all alone FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? MS: Like the first day i saw my niece. FS: What makes a design successful? MS: When you can see yourself in it. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? MS: good of course. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? MS: For me, a designer is someone who creates a new society in an existing environment. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? MS: Design is the most powerful and sustainable field which leads us to the better future. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? MS: I was an outdoor exhibition held in a huge terrace of a fancy restaurant in Seoul. Hope my next will be held somewhere in europe. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? MS: All my inspiration is coming from my daily life. I try to find strong and unique specificities in my busy life. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? MS: I spent 18 years of my life in France. That is where i could learn how to find an identity. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? MS: Now i live in Seoul. When i design a furniture i don't feel any of the cultural heritage affects my design however in architecture or interior design i always try to keep my identity using the korean culture as concept. If you are very good at mixing cultural heritage with your design, there is no cons because it will show to the world the beauty of the country and also your very unique design philosophy. FS: How do you work with companies? MS: I do work as an invited artist. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? MS: To select a good designer, any company have to know what kind of design they need. A designer and a company need to have an endless conversation until they understand what to do. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? MS: When i see something new or inspirable, i kept that image in my head and draw lines until my design looks useful and beautiful. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? MS: Bed, desk, chairs, my dog house and a lounge chair FS: Can you describe a day in your life? MS: I do sleep in the morning, and during my day i go out to seek something new and fun and i do start to work from midnight until the morning comes. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? MS: God designs the world, Designer designs the world so we are the god. FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer? MS: I do have only postives of being a designer because i know i am happy when i design. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? MS: no rules. just be crazy FS: What skills are most important for a designer? MS: to find a design identity and keep it up FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? MS: My hands. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? MS: Time doesn't matter whatever it takes. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? MS: usually it takes a month. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? MS: What is art for you ? FS: What was your most important job experience? MS: being a student. FS: Who are some of your clients? MS: private clients seeking for the uniqueness FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? MS: Designing a furniture for yourself is the most enjoyable work because nobody can't stop but me. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? MS: Progressing. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? MS: I develop my own designs myself. FS: How can people contact you? MS: by word of mouth.
