Interview with wet n wild® Wild Shine Nail Polish at Thursday 2nd of October 2014 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? WNWWSNP: I didn't know what I wanted to be right away when growing up. I did know that I liked learning about many subjects such as science, history, psychology, English, and the arts. When I discovered product design, it involved many things that were similar to those classes mentioned. As with science, I continually test a product to make sure that it works for what I intend. With history, I get to dig into the past of a product and understand how it came to be. With psychology, I really get to understand the person that I'm designing for. With English, I learn to communicate my products in a non-verbal way, and with the arts, I get to flex my creativity. I received my degree from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a focus on consumer electronics. I found a love with designing for women when I had the opportunity to design Swarovski's 1st electronic products. I am now in the beauty industry helping women feel good about themselves and the products that they use. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? WNWWSNP: For over 35 years, Markwins Beauty Products has kept its promise to be the trusted beauty destination for ALL women. wet n wild is a beauty leader in trend and color, maintaining a starting price point of $0.99 since its inception in 1979. Since 2012, wet n wild’s partnership with global beauty ambassador, eight-time Grammy-award winning artist Fergie, has brought worldwide notoriety – culminating in a wet n wild’s Fergie CenterStage Collection, curated and chosen by the artist herself. Black Radiance is the #1 ethnic beauty brand in America, delivering quality products for women with darker complexions. Our annual Fantasy Makers line allows women to explore and experiment with costume design. Distinctive packaging, unmatched quality formulas, and unbeatable value have made Markwins Beauty Products a staple for beauty consumers and an institution amongst the world’s finest retailers. FS: What is "design" for you? WNWWSNP: Design means choice for me. Everyone is a designer. We design what we will eat in the day, what our routine in the shower is, what we plan to accomplish by the end of the day, and how we want to live our lives. We all make choices that lead us to where we are today. When I design products, I try to make the best choices to bring a product to where it needs to be. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? WNWWSNP: Beauty products FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? WNWWSNP: It would have to be the wet n wild® Wild Shine nail polish. It's the first ergonomic nail polish that is designed with function, form, and emotion in mind. It appeals to me because the body is asymmetrical which is not typical for a polish, making it truly unique. FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? WNWWSNP: Earphones. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? WNWWSNP: 3D Printers. FS: When do you feel the most creative? WNWWSNP: Midday and midnight FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? WNWWSNP: Usability. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? WNWWSNP: I start off feeling responsible. I feel responsible for creating products that have a purpose. Then it grows into excitement because I don't know what the end product will look like. In the end, I feel satisfied because like a puzzle, all of the pieces fit together and makes sense. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? WNWWSNP: Its an A-Ha moment. Your eyes light up, your breath is held, and you smile to yourself because all of the hard work came together. FS: What makes a design successful? WNWWSNP: Function, form, and emotion. FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? WNWWSNP: How purposeful is it? Does it fulfill a need? FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? WNWWSNP: Innovate by thinking differently and doing differently, to deliver the best products and services. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? WNWWSNP: Many are becoming more aware about the importance of design, the overall impact it has on people, and the environment. In that regard, I feel that we are growing into a future that is more responsible, and we’re becoming smarter about the things we produce. FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? WNWWSNP: Nature is the best design, so naturally I'm drawn to natural things for inspiration. FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? WNWWSNP: Approachable, user friendly, intelligent, and beautiful. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? WNWWSNP: I live in LA. The pros of living in LA is that it's the biggest melting pot of different cultures in the world, so I am exposed to many different things that are all educational and inspirational. I can't think of any cons at the moment. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? WNWWSNP: A good designer should be able to show you their process in their portfolio, and how they achieved their design. My suggestions for a company working with a designer would be, to get them involved with many things. Include them in necessary meetings so they understand the lifecycle of their design, send them to tradeshows to keep them current, create a separate space to play in the office (ping pong table, foosball, etc.) as play triggers creativity, and have a room dedicated to blue sky thinking where anyone and everyone can come in to share ideas. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? WNWWSNP: It's different every time. It all depends on what I'm designing, but I always involve research in my process. FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? WNWWSNP: Don't be afraid to try something new. FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? WNWWSNP: K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) FS: What skills are most important for a designer? WNWWSNP: Empathetic, Observational, and can connect the dots. FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.? WNWWSNP: I use sculpting tools as I like to work with my hands first, then I jump on to the computer and build it in Solidworks. FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time? WNWWSNP: Good question. Everybody has a moment of focus in their day to day lives, be it 1 hour, 3, 5, or more. You need to understand how your body works, know when your peak to perform is, and deliver all that you can in that time span. FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? WNWWSNP: I've had an experience where it took me 2 weeks to design a product to 2 months. It really depends. FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? WNWWSNP: How did you come up with that? FS: What was your most important job experience? WNWWSNP: All of my experiences were stepping stones to where I am now, so they were all important in many ways. If you ask about what job experience influenced my design philosophy, it would be my time I spent in Japan. FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? WNWWSNP: I enjoy designing products for women. Being a woman myself, I feel that I can channel in to what we may want or like. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? WNWWSNP: I'd like to take my current company that I'm with to the next level, by introducing the value of good design. In th future, I'd like to develop my own products. FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? WNWWSNP: I work with a terrific team to make sure my design ideas are actualized. (V.P of Marketing - Brian Talbot, Art Director - Cindy Wang, Senior Brand Manager - Emily Huang) FS: How can people contact you? WNWWSNP: maithydesign@gmail.com
