Interview with Max Hauser

Home > Designer Interviews > Max Hauser

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Max Hauser (MH) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Max Hauser by clicking here.

Interview with Max Hauser at Wednesday 16th of April 2014

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MH: I am an architect and have become a designer through my experience in working on projects of various scales. I have always been interested in design and being an architect allows me to work in different design disciplines.

FS: What is "design" for you?
MH: Design for me is to find a functional, yet simple and aesthetic shape that is free of clutter and uncompromisingly detailed and realized. To design requires a profound understanding of materials and production processes.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
MH: I think that I am trying to improve a design by minimizing it and by trying to find the most logical and consequent solution.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MH: Seeing your design being realized can be daunting or uplifting as it reveals all its positive and negative qualities. It is very satisfying to see a piece of design being realized after a long period of development.

FS: What makes a design successful?
MH: The design has to be simple, clean and consequent in its execution and detailing. It has to evoke a positive emotion at the same time either through its aesthetics or function.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MH: The first impression is always visual. I am judging its shape and proportions and then I am investigating whether it functions. I find that both aspects are equally important.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MH: Designers should help to reduce the clutter that surrounds us. They should not produce things that are not needed and will be eventually thrown away and harm the environment. They should help others who do not know much about design to understand what good design is.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
MH: You have to have a profound sense of proportions and a strong interest in technology. You have to have an interest in understanding how things function and how they are built and produced.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MH: The best way to explore a design is by sketching by hand. Physical models are the most important tool to understand whether you are on the right track or not.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
MH: I work by myself but the constant dialogue with other designers is key to critically question your work and to improve it.

FS: How can people contact you?
MH: info@trifoldtable.com

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
