Interview with Nicolò Caruso at Thursday 17th of April 2014

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
NC: I have always wished to be a designer. I have studied product design oriented fashion at the Politecnico of Milan; after I attended a Master in lighting design in the same institute.

FS: What is "design" for you?
NC: Design is a field of knowledge that may improve the quality of human life and elevate the beauty of the places to a superior level.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
NC: lamps

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
NC: My favorite design is the Sushi armchair by Carlo Colombo for Zanotta.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
NC: when I smoke a cigarette.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
NC: exenthiality of the shape

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
NC: Expectations...

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
NC: Satisfaction.

FS: What makes a design successful?
NC: Beauty

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
NC: Funtionality

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
NC: The means of communication has a great impact and responsibility on society. Industrialization without criteria has responsibility on environment. The designer can make a sense of change.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
NC: Freedom

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
NC: Nature of things

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
NC: My design style is a marriage between essentiality and symbolism. For example, the shape of the circle is abundant in my job because it is simple and it expresses an energetic field.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
NC: I live in Italy, therefore the Italian cultural heritage has been very important in my formation. One should be able to create a good design anywhere.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
NC: I develop my design in my mind during some days, after I elaborate the project on my computer and I make some changes.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
NC: Nessino Artemide, Castore Artemide, Edge Artemide, Amami Danese, Cubo Danese.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
NC: I myself am a young designer.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
NC: The positive and negative aspect of being a designer is being an artist.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
NC: Essentiality

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
NC: logic

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
NC: A Mac, or two are better. Adobe master collection, 3d model softwares, pencil and paper.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
NC: Time is like a fluid flowing, you can only stay inside it.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
NC: I think that one cannot specify an exact time to design an object of design. It may take a few years as a few days, I reckon that experience has a key role.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
NC: I prefer to design lamps because light has a fundamental role in furnishing an environment.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
NC: Both
