Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer CHC Digital (CD) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of CHC Digital by clicking here.

Interview with CHC Digital at Tuesday 13th of May 2014

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CD: From an early age I had a burning desire to find out how things work. As a result, I started to take things apart to create new designs. My perspective on design is that it is more than just aesthetics. It is how you create an informative, easy to use and compelling user experience. It also allows me as a designer to harness the power of technology and apply it in the most innovative way. I get truly excited by converting creative ideas into digital solutions. This ensures the aesthetics are beautifully conveyed and appropriately evolved within the digital space.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CD: Based in Central London, CHC Digital provides innovative web, branding and print media design solution. It is our firm belief that careful consideration of the client's needs can accomplish designs which both look great and generate financial success. Armed with the motivation and forward thinking necessary in this contemporary market, our team of designers work closely with the client to give them the control they want and the expertise they need.

FS: What is "design" for you?
CD: Design is a way to deliver a creative solution in the most elegant and simple manner, whilst being able to make a positive impact on consumers lives.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CD: Digital Interfaces: Websites, E-Commerce platforms, branding and apps. Print: Look books, magazines, presentations and marketing assets.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CD: Raymond Lowey’s S1 Steam Locomotive. He was way ahead of his time in regards to design, adding scientific thought to his innovative designs. His legacy and thought process has inspired countless designers including myself.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CD: I designed added functionality to improve the user experience for Bentley owners.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CD: Most coding language has an infinite amount of possibilities. PHP offers more than most.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
CD: When there is a problem that doesn't seem to have an answer.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CD: I focus on simplicity, usability and shareability.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CD: Design is an escape for me. I can cut out all my surroundings and concentrate on producing something that can help people. I am hugely passionate about my designs and aim to produce innovative designs that are impactful as well as providing an enjoyable user experience each and every time.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
CD: It is always a gratifying experience when my work is realized.

FS: What makes a design successful?
CD: Functionality. I believe that without functionality a design, no matter how complex, will be rendered useless. If you can achieve the right balance between functionality and simplicity then you'll have a greater chance of success.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
CD: I consider the impact the design will have on people and what sets it apart from other designs in the same category. What does this design have that others don’t? If a design has similar properties to others, why should I invest my time or money into it?

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CD: See Magazine Survey for list of services.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
CD: Minimalistic

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
CD: Alessi Kettle Michael Graves Charles Eames lounge chair Meinstruck Mont Blanc Cartier Roadster Watch Bang & Olufsen BeoSound

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
CD: Keep it simple.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
CD: Software: Adobe Creative Suite 5: Photoshop, Dreamweaver and InDesign Adobe Light Room 3DS Max Cinema 4D Hardware: iMac 27” 2014 Air Port time capsule iPad 2 Leap Motion

FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
CD: I thought that was easy?

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
CD: We are a flexible team of talented digital designers, driven by originality and passionate about invention.
