Interview with Joe Richardson

Home > Designer Interviews > Joe Richardson

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Joe Richardson (JR) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Joe Richardson by clicking here.

Interview with Joe Richardson at Thursday 31st of October 2013
Joe Richardson
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
JR: Back at school I was always interested in creating on more than just paper, so Design and Technology classes heightened my interest. But I was always baffled by working on things for yourself, I was sure design was about improving real life for real people, so I guess this is where I started to really focus on a very people oriented approach.

FS: What is "design" for you?
JR: Design is about improving real life for real people, and injecting a little bit of magic into everyday experiences.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
JR: I like to challenge what we already know. A new twist on an everyday object that improves on it simply and elegantly, backed up by clever little observations and insights.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
JR: It changes all the time, I don't think I could ever have a favourite, but right now I really enjoy a tea light holder by the Swedish design studio FormUsWithLove. A simple glass tea light holder with a groove down the edge, perfect for slotting a match down to light the candle so you don't have to hold it upside down or risk burning your finger. Genius.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
JR: I don't think there's any particular time as such, if an idea strikes you then you work on it.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
JR: I think I must go through the whole spectrum. Wonder, excitement, anticipation, fear, relief, they're all in there at some point throughout every project.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
JR: Mostly I think right, what next? There's a lot to be said for seeing how your designs are helping people, positive feedback is always nice to take, but I always try to take on criticism, designs are never really finished, you can always improve, after all that's what design is about.

FS: What makes a design successful?
JR: If it makes a difference in somebody's life for the better.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
JR: People are the reason I do what I do. I think design is about improving real life for real people. I try not to have a set style but if there is any theme to my work it is a very people centred approach.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
JR: Nothing is ever set in stone, I think you can take that as both positive and negative.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
JR: Empathy, you must always try to understand people. You're designing for them.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
JR: Lots of clay, card, foam board and wire. I like a lot of the hands on work and having something physical that occupies a space in front of you that you can manipulate really helps refine the idea. I don't think you should get bogged down with which software and hardware you use but recently using a new wacom intuos tablet has really helped me get more information from my sketches with regards to colour, texture etc.

FS: How can people contact you?
JR: My phone number and email are both on my website.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
