Interview with Junghye Yoon at Wednesday 16th of April 2014 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? JY: Junghye Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea in 1982. I received my B.A. in Domus Academy, Milan in 2008. Since 2005, I have shown my work in many group exhibitions nationally and internationally. I founded Honeydew Rabbit Co.,Ltd. in 2011. What is design? What gives you a sheer happiness like a baby? I think the answer is design and creativity. I believe that the design is something that keeps a children’s imagination, and such design gives the connection with the world. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? JY: Honeydew Rabbit has children's best interests at heart and values their fun and safe experience. All Honeydew Rabbit products are designed and produced from children's perspective, by designers experienced in childcare and educators specialized in infant/toddler care. FS: What is "design" for you? JY: I always design for humor, sensitivity, interaction. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? JY: furniture & lights FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it? JY: Arco Floor Lamp by Achille Castiglioni FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company? JY: Light for interior FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? JY: Fabric & wood FS: When do you feel the most creative? JY: During a break time or having a trip FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? JY: User centric FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? JY: Return to the innocence of childhood FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? JY: Every mom would want to give the best to her baby. FS: What makes a design successful? JY: Experience and keen insight FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first? JY: My judgment is worth doing it or not. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? JY: Non-toxic, environmentally-friendly materials and thoughtful, safe designs protect children's health and safety. FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design? JY: Customized design; Everyone is a designer. FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition? JY: “Freedom” Superstudio, Milano Design Week, Italy(Apr. 2013), MAISON&OBJET, Paris, France(Sep. 2014) FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations? JY: Nature and Animal FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design? JY: I like to mix and match colors and use soft and flexible material. I dream of world in rounded circle not in square shape. FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country? JY: Koreans are humble and polite. We were raised and taught to be considerate of others, and this nature of characteristic helped to make good design for human. FS: How do you work with companies? JY: We are teamed with great people, the atmosphere is always enjoyable. We believe we change the world like Apple. FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer? JY: Person who has strong belief and values, who can express oneself well. FS: Can you talk a little about your design process? JY: Frame Work, Scenario, sketch, value and so on. FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home? JY: Chair, table, rug, light, storage FS: Can you describe a day in your life? JY: Journey FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers? JY: Enjoy your design! Enjoy your life! FS: What is your "golden rule" in design? JY: Have to make something new. FS: What skills are most important for a designer? JY: Capacity of expression FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end? JY: Depends on a project FS: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer? JY: What value will you present to the world as a gift? FS: What was your most important job experience? JY: Childbirth and infant care FS: Who are some of your clients? JY: Customers(babies, kids, parents) FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why? JY: Kids product, I would make a child smile. FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you? JY: Collaboration with big brand like as kids furniture or products FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself? JY: We work as a team. We always share about fun, safe and new.
