Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Roberta Emili (RE) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Roberta Emili by clicking here.

Interview with Roberta Emili at Friday 22nd of June 2018

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
RE: I have always loved drawing since I was a child. In fact, I attended a drawing school and continued with studies in the field of design. Turning an idea into a real object is a great emotion for me. Being a designer allows me to realize this dream.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
RE: I worked for many years in a studio where I learned a lot. Currently I try to work alone, preferring to face the competitions because they stimulate me more in my work

FS: What is "design" for you?
RE: Design for me is a creative process that involves me emotionally. It's a way of communicating through the creation of an object.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
RE: The areas of design are varied and can all be interesting for me to be undertaken.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
RE: A series of doors for a company that produces decorated aluminum doors.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
RE: All the materials and technologies that provide the ability to create forms more plastics.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
RE: Creativity is an unexpected emotional state. These are the different life situations that lead me to think of a new object or the way in which I could improve an existing one.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
RE: The things on which I focus change according to the object that I find myself having to analyze. There must be a balance between form and function.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
RE: Trepidation and satisfaction.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
RE: An immense joy and satisfaction.

FS: What makes a design successful?
RE: The successful design is one that remains over time.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
RE: A good design is that you will not forget.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
RE: The designer must create interesting projects from the point of view of form, content and materials so that people become aware of the value of an object of thought. Understanding all the procedure that takes to get to the realization of an object, people should become more aware when buying an object.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
RE: At the moment I see that some companies are turning directly to designers, through competitions launched periodically. There is a more direct contact between the company and the designer. This openness facilitates the designer who has good ideas in the success of his work. There are also designers who deal with self-production and it is very interesting a work of this type because they are able to create products more faithful to their idea of departure without having to submit to the inevitable changes required by the industrialization.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
RE: My source of inspiration is the direct contact with everyday life, what surrounds me stimulates me to look for new solutions.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
RE: Every project projects me into a unique world, so I faced it differently from the previous one, looking for a harmonious style aimed at the client's requests.

FS: How do you work with companies?
RE: As a freelancer I have not yet got to work with a company.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
RE: Companies should evaluate the previous work of a designer and when it comes to a designer with little experience, evaluate the commitment and the imagination of the project that they ask him to tackle. There must be a strong underlying idea that involves the client, thus leading to the realization of that project.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
RE: Change according to the project I have to develop. There are various aspects to be developed when dealing with a new object to be designed. The function is one of these. I try to keep the shape in harmony with the function of the object; one must understand what it is for. Many projects are born out of the desire to improve an already existing object.

FS: How can people contact you?
RE: Through my mai: emili_roberta@libero.it

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
