Franco Schiaffino
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
FS: I found the race a bit by chance, but from boy I loved to draw and carve wood.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
FS: My studio is a small company extensive experience. I design and build orders entrusted in most cases.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
FS: Projects with resolutions that respond to various requirements.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
FS: I do not consider a unique design as favorite It would not be right for the amount of wonderful designs in the world.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
FS: A system for booths built in steel and wood board.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
FS: I do not like one option, I like to think with drawings hand. Make presentations with programs is easier and faster. Although sometimes use programs to evaluate the proposals that I can not visualize.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
FS: I do not know when, it just happens.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
FS: aesthetics, communication and technology.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
FS: Euphoria, uncertainty, happiness, bad humor, joy, anguish, these are mainly.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
FS: Happiness, as I usually realize what I want, but not always.

FS: What makes a design successful?
FS: It is a combination of good design, social interest and right time.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
FS: The coherence of the product against objectives of the designer.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
FS: Should be equal to that which assumes a medic.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
FS: If we continue approaching to the MK, we will continue to limit our most interesting capabilities. If we simply design, will remain a useful profession to society.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
FS: I see other works, even not related to what I'm projecting. The sources are variable: architecture and design magazines, stones and objects, web design and architecture, etc..

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
FS: I do not recognize a defined style. There is continuity in the work, but I do not perceive it as a "thread conscious" during the project. The focus varies according to the Project.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
FS: Buenos Aires, Argentina. BA is a huge cosmopolitan city with a rich and varied cultural development, this is pro to design. As a country, has little population, based on an agroexport economy, and the industry is relatively small and prefer to buy proven developments, this is con to design.

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
FS: More than a good designer, it is important that the designer and the company is well communicated, that makes a good designer greatly.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
FS: I do not have a linear design process, the design strategy depends on the project to make.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
FS: Imac Classic Corkscrew Giant Boulder Note pads to write / draw Torito

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
FS: In the morning, I drink coffee and I start to work, I usually organize the day at night before. If I have to design: A) I know that design and draw. B) I do not know what design and hand sketch on note pads, paper, etc.. C) I do not find solutions and I'll do something else. D) I return to design, sometimes this round is successful, others not. E) If I do not succeed implement the project, start a different task.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
FS: Fame is not durable, the designer they is worth, is by years of valuable work. And much of that valuable work it is not only for window design. Much of this work is related to finding your true ability. This makes you to purr with joy without realizing it, doesn't matter you are in Mercedes Benz of Germany or in your small studio in BA. This ability that gives you pleasure, is the closest thing to the talent, is when you "it flows". And it's only thing that will allow you to work 30/50 years in this profession and you get up in the morning and you say: How can I design that which asked me yesterday? And you design with curiosity, joy and fear for what is to come, completely vulnerable to the events of the Project and that gives you happiness, the true happiness.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
FS: Negative, you are the questions my wife. The positives are that I get a chance to be happy.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
FS: You proof once more. Is infallible.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
FS: Develop your curiosity.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
FS: Notepad and pencil / bic / ink / etc. Much useless objects around me that catch my attention. Many mechanical pencils. Many pens. More pencils and pens. Imac. Books on philosophy, education, psychology, scientific neurology, etc.. TED. Pinterest. Magazines, many are Domus.

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
FS: The time is always misses me, I work slow and I like to get right, so... In addition, the closure of Project it have an inevitable and necessary crisis. Nearly always need more hours work, especially in large or complex project.

FS: What was your most important job experience?
FS: A exhibit design project for Saint-Gobain Isover Argentina I named 'Urbanization Isover " We had to show the qualities and characteristics of their products Thermal Insulation, Acoustics and Reverberation. For this, we develop various real-scale main rooms for viewing, perceiving and check those product characteristics, it are demanded to heat emission and sound. The project was developed in 300m2, where "real houses" were built in 5 days, respecting the rules of classic construction.

FS: Who are some of your clients?
FS: Allianz, Bank Boston, BASF, Cayman Island, Claxson, Colonia Express, Eternit, Grays, Grendene, Johnson&Johnson, Cerámicas Ilva, Banco Itaú, JVC, Kolff, MGE, Molinos, Orica, Pall Technologies, Saint-Gobain Isover, Silicon Graphics, Reebok, etc.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
FS: I like two types of work: Exhibit design, because it is vertiginous and many projects are done per year. Product design, since I can deepen, get to detail and leave the project "rest" to find better solutions.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
FS: My future is: Design all that I can in my studio. Lecturing in design workshop. Satisfy my curiosity to know how we work during the creative process and find the best way to teach this.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
FS: I work alone.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
FS: I am designing a barbecue to reduce the use of firewood.
