Interview with Ian Hughes

Home > Designer Interviews > Ian Hughes

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Ian Hughes (IH) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Ian Hughes by clicking here.

Interview with Ian Hughes at Monday 4th of March 2013

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
IH: What made me decided to become a designer was after several semesters of taking a ceramics class. I really enjoyed creating something out of nothing and working clay really pointed that out to me. It wasn't until after a conversation with my ceramics teacher, that I decided to pursue a degree in Industrial Design.

FS: What is "design" for you?
IH: Design is everything, it is a way of life.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
IH: I do a lot of sketching and computer work. I use and enjoy the Adobe Suite(photoshop, illustrator, indesign) and for CAD I use Rhinoceros 3D

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
IH: I am kind of a night owl and work in the late hours of the evening. It is when I get most of my work done.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
IH: It is hard to say. I usually do a large amount of sketching to find a general direction or idea. Then refine, refine, refine until I have a solid enough idea of what it will look like and then bring into a CAD program. But that is suggesting that all of that goes to plan, which sometimes is not the case.

FS: What makes a design successful?
IH: I think that a design is successful when it looks as though it hasn't been designed at all. When there has been so much thought involved in creating it, that when someone sees it for the first time can't find anything wrong with it.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
IH: What is its use and how does one us it.

FS: How can people contact you?
IH: Through email

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
