Interview with Nicola Butti-Buttistile Design at Tuesday 12th of March 2013

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
NB: 2001. Laurea in disegno industriale, Politecnico di Milano 2002. Master in transportation design and management, 110L, Politecnico di Milano Yes, I always wanted to be a designer, and I'm always working to become a better one.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

FS: What is "design" for you?
NB: life.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
NB: designing MOTORCYCLES is my favourite.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
NB: On sunny days, before going for a motorcycle ride. I feel some sort of creative energy flowing through my whole body, and I can suddenly visualize where and how my lines should flow.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
NB: User's experience.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
NB: Mostly happiness. Surprise. Sometimes frustrations, as my pen/mouse/mouth cannot express my deeper feeling for the specific project

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
NB: Pride!

FS: What makes a design successful?
NB: Emotion.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
NB: Who's supposed to be USING it? how? What other options does he/she have?

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
NB: Designers can change the world. The key-factor is to find customers willing to invest and risk.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
NB: more and more interface, less shapes.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
NB: I lived in China for the last 7 years and yes, I feel that my cultural background (Italian) is always a dominating element of my designs. I had good teachers, inside and outside the schools I attended, and also I was lucky enough to be born in such a beautiful place as Como.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
NB: Dare changing your life. Use internet in a clever way to find OPPORTUNITIES, and open as many doors as possible, in the process of becoming the master of ONE specific skill.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
NB: it all depends on your customer...

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
NB: SMILE.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
NB: Imagination, creativity and communication. All technical skills can be learnt or outsourced

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
NB: A great international team, thank you guys!

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
NB: A few, including motorcycles, bicycles accessories, and new medical devices for VINNO: follow us on buttistile.com for the latest news

FS: How can people contact you?
NB: nicolabutti@gmail.com

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
