Interview with Chung-Ah Kim at Thursday 10th of May 2012 FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer? CK: I always liked any type of art and surround myself with any type of art. When I started looking for Art School, I began to look more into design, it was something that I felt was more useful and more purposeful. I loved looking at art in all types of medias but I wanted to make something with my hands that could be more functional. My mother was a heavy influence on my decision to lean towards interior design and furniture design. watching her build our house, in korea, from the ground up. Her vision from the exterior to the interior, watching her see this home she envisioned evolving from materials to a home was what inspired me. FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio? CK: I do not have a personal design studio so I use all the resources around me that I can. My school's workshop, the tech shop in my home city, my garage anywhere and any space I can use I use it, but I like to be surrounded by other creative people and artist, they all help me push myself to succeed and inspire me. FS: What is "design" for you? CK: It's simple; design is art and functionality put together. something that you can look at and enjoy something so beautiful but it is also functional. design is a way for me to communicate and idea. it's fun, its challenging, it excites me, it makes my heart move. FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most? CK: I had a lot of experience of designing an Interiors of homes. I really enjoyed designing since it's very intimate and focuses on details. Though I would like to design more of the furnitures. I really loved making my bench. FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology? CK: Wood, Metal, Glass. i love auto cad software, an idea going from my sketchbook into a software that brings it to closer to life. FS: When do you feel the most creative? CK: I get inspired by other peoples designs. I also get inspired when I'm outside, the buildings, the sculptures, the furniture, the bridges, and natures. FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing? CK: It's hard to say which aspect I focus on more. I try to keep it 50/50 when it comes to the visual aspect and the functional aspect. I like to have a balance. but I have to say the conceptual aspect is what takes most of my focus. The very begning, the idea, the art, the start of a design FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design? CK: Excitement, peace, tranquility, its a mixed emotion of all things positive, I love it. I feel complete at the and when the project is complete. FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized? CK: Excitement, accomplished, rewarded, happiness, motivation to do more. FS: What makes a design successful? CK: Functionality, innovation, the beauty of it. FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment? CK: To create a design that lasts long where it can turn into a sustainable piece. Focus on functional Using a materials that are sustainable that helps environment.
