A Fine Line

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Rope Lighting

INSPIRATION:
Depression is a modern-day disease and mental illness that is widespread in overpopulated metropolises. An extensive number of people suffer from it in silence as there is shame or a fear of being judged or labeled. A Fine Line does not seek to cure depression, rather it hopes to raise awareness in a straightforward way.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A Fine Line is a light that speaks to people who are overwhelmed by depression. Its message relies on strong symbolism, and it doesn’t hold back while addressing the sensitive topic of suicide: the light switch is activated by a rope that resembles a noose. When the light is switched off and there is darkness, the noose is present. But, when the noose is detached (via magnetic clips), the light is switched on. Whether it’s tied up or freed, you have complete control over the light - and life.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A Fine Line can switch on and off when using the magnetic clip. The light switch is activated by a rope that resembles a noose. When the light is switched off and there is darkness, the noose is present. But, when the noose is detached (via magnetic clips), the light is switched on. The interaction is represented strong symbolism - the users can untie the noose of rope to control the light switch - and life.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2018 in Hong Kong and finished in May 2018 in Hong Kong, and was exhibited in Hong Kong Polytechnic University Annual Show in June 2018, and was exhibited in Singapore Red Dot Design Museum in September 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
There are some special material applications in a lighting - "A Fine Line". The magnetic clip is applied to control the LED lighting for switching on and off. Comparing with other lighting products in the current market, A Fine Line's switching technology application is more special and meaningful. And also, the electronic wire is hidden by the rope. The material and technology application in total are completely related to my core background story.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
This dimension of the lamp is around 20(L)*10(W)*8(D)cm. This size is not included the soft rope.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Depression is the common disease in the worldwide. Most of the people are afraid of facing their disease since some of people would place a negative label on them. During the research stage, most of the depressed person told us that they can not control the depression by themselves. Therefore, A Fine Line is designed to not only explain the background of depression and raise people awareness in depressed topic. And also, providing positive message of detaching the noose during using A Fine Line. This is at least one of the things they can control.

CHALLENGE:
The topic of depression is not easy to apply in a product since the result is not to cure the disease. In the process, it is hard to find out a suitable element to apply on the lamp design. And the importance of this lamp is raising more awareness on depression. Finally, the noose of a rope is chosen for the lighting control and the strong message behind A Fine Line. That is the process of this lamp.
