DESIGN NAME: Balestra
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Table
INSPIRATION: The concept was inspired by the idea of creating a multifunctional tea table for lounge zones and living rooms which would correspond to contemporary functional needs, higher level of comfort and sustainable design trends.
Style of the design was inspired by midcentury Italian furniture masterpieces and the beauty of natural materials.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design is a fusion of tea table, bed side table and a footrest.
Glass tabletop with a shelf and two soft footrest pads are attached to a wooden base with three legs. The front legs are reinforced with a metal jumper and stretchers attached to the base. The rear leg has an arched end which provides stability to the table.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table has no moving parts and does not require transformations for multifunctional use. It is installed with the rear leg close to the sofa. The person goes to the side of the table, sits on the sofa, leans back and rests his/her feet on one of the soft pads. Without leaning forward, he/she can reach objects on the tabletop, for example, take or put a glass of water, a book or TV remote. At the same time, unused items, such as a smartphone or keys, can be placed on a shelf under the table top and stay at the reach of a hand. Another person can perform same actions on the other side of the table.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2019 in Veliky Novgorod (Russia) and finished in February 2020 in Saint-Petersburg (Russia)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A survey was conducted among 60 adults to identify the need for a compact (3 in 1) multifunctional table for lounge zones and living rooms. The majority of respondents considered this piece of furniture in demand and that it could become a comfortable replacement for traditional tea tables and footrests. However some noted that not all cultures accept to put feet on the table. Therefore while creating design the foot pads were set apart from the table top and shifted to a lower level.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create new ergonomic structure with harmonious midcentury appearance.
Despite performing three functions it had to look solid and light and be durable at the same time. One of the solutions was to use metal stretchers for structural rigidity which made finally design look like crossbow and determined its' name (in Italian).
