DESIGN NAME: The Solovetsky Archipelago
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Development Concept
INSPIRATION: The dramatic history of the Solovetsky (Solovki) archipelago remembers the times when this place was the setting of the famous Russian Orthodox Solovetsky Monastery complex, and when a camp for political prisoners (GULAG) was placed here. The archipelago is located away from the mainland and most of the time is inaccessible to tourists and pilgrims, the time seems to have stopped here. Being a national treasure, the territory will be a great example of development, which intends both to preserve the spiritual, historical, natural heritage, and to implement the UNESCO principles of sustainable tourism.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Urban planning solutions are designed to preserve nature and monastery privacy, to revive traditional crafts and to create modern living conditions. They aimed at using energy-saving technologies and alternative energy sources to minimize the use of diesel fuel. Separate collection of waste and use of environmentally friendly waste recycling are provided. It is planned to switch to environmentally friendly modes of transport and restrict car traffic on the historic roads of the archipelago.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The development concept provides for rehabilitation and maintenance of unique natural and cultural landscapes being in optimal balance between man and nature. For sustainable development, no expanding of the built-up area and a modest new construction are planned. The development of tourism activities is based on the principles of sustainable tourism introduced by UNESCO. It is proposed to restrict the tourist flow at the existing level and to bring tourist routes under control.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Solovetsky archipelago is located in the Onega Bay of the White Sea, Russia.
The project has began with the construction of an airport runway in the summer of 2019 and is expected to be completed by 2025.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the concept development, a lot of research work was done to study the existing situation, the limitations of the Russian legislation on the protection of monuments and UNESCO regulations.
CHALLENGE: The project was a challenge from the first step. Since the territory is difficult to reach from the mainland, it was a quest to get to this historically, naturally and culturally significant place to study it. The concept required strong coordination with sociologists, representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church and regional authorities.
