DESIGN NAME: WEMI
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive product
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of WEMI came from my grandmother. I am studying internationally and physically separated from my family. Every year I back home, my grandmother holds my hands and asks if I am doing well. She is not good at using a smartphone but wants to interact with me more often. This drives me to consider, how to design something meaningful, unique and stands for the absence of being for families similar to us?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WEMI is a pair of customized portable devices that create the experience of handholding, they allow separated family members to play when they miss each other. The shape is generated from the user palms and way of holding, so each pair of devices is unique and fulfills with memory and love. The device will capture the users’ hands movement and represent it in real-time by a breathing light and tactile feedback to give them a sense of being together.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The experience starting from the process of making to using. Users purchase the material online and reform the material into a shape that generates from their palms and way of holding. This also allows a fun interaction between both the grandparents and grandchildren, as each form is unique by itself. Once the form is set, users can use the application to 3d scan the object and upload it to the Wemi app, the final model will be produced and delivered to the users.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2018, finished in October 2018 in Melbourne.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Millennials studying internationally are physically separated from their families. They are busy with their daily lives, lacking the stimulation in contacting their families. They prefer convenience and speed to make a conversation sharp and simple. While their parents/grandparents would rather long-lasting communication. Family members can see their loved ones’ faces as they talk from anywhere in the world through smartphones, but sometimes words are not enough. The powerful connection of touch is lost. This project is investigating how to create a sense of being together that makes intergenerational and international interaction deeper for all parties.
CHALLENGE: As we all know, some of the Chinese people are pretty shy to express feelings to their loved ones. So one of the research challenges in this project is how to make the experience intimate and special for separated families.
