DESIGN NAME: CreFun
PRIMARY FUNCTION: 3D Cartoon Maker Education
INSPIRATION: This project is derived from our investigation, which shows that primary school students are generally interested in 3D design, and they love drawing and hand-making and have high expectations for designing and making toys and practical items. And there is currently no education content on the market that is the same as ours, and the 3D printing course is single, with low student participation and high costs.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Crefun provides a new maker education content of 3D cartoon design for teenagers, aiming at improving children's abilities in artistic design, computer operation, space imagination, etc. An easy-to-learn software of 3D cartoon design EasyToy is developped,whose unique interaction enables users to create 3D models by sketching. With the implements of "learning by doing" education theory, Crefun maker education content including hand-drawing design, 3D modeling, 3D printing, and plush toy making.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The 3D cartoon maker education courses include 5 themes: 1) Hand drawing. To learn how to draw three views of cartoon shapes and how to design cartoon characters. 2) Modeling. To learn modeling by using the sketch-based modeling software EasyToy. 3) 2D pattern design. To learn the relation between 2D and 3D and design 2D patterns for 3D toy models. 4) Handmade sewing. To learn sewing skills to make a toy. 5) Presentation. To learn how to express themselves and appreciate the work of others.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After studying the theory of children's pedagogy, doing some investigations and transforming theoretical research results, we design this educational content and then conduct teaching experiments in primary schools. Such as 4 summer camps in Yangzhou, Jiangsu and 8 teaching experiments in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. The content and teaching methods are continuously improved during this period with good feedbacks, high student participation, active classrooms, and rich teaching achievements.
CHALLENGE: One of the challenges in the design process comes from how to better integrate classroom education with cartoon design content, and how to make it easier for students to understand and innovate. The second challenge is that our thinking is more advanced. We realize the importance of cultivating students' design thinking and maker ability in the teenage years, while Chinese society generally pays less attention.
