PRIMARY FUNCTION: Nursery School
INSPIRATION: The Interior design is based on children's activities in the nursery whose educational approach for children is based on Reggio nell Emillia approach. It gave us many inspirations and other educational method like Montessori method gave too. In addition my daily life with 2 daughters they are 5 years old and 3 years old gave me great inspirations.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A nursery school for children aged 0 to 2 in a room of about 140 m2 with a solarium in Tokyo, Japan. The space that children spend for their hole day should be very close to a house, and would fit children's activities and body dimensions specific to this ages.
By installed a wooden frame of 9cm square cedar timber into an existing RC structure the space is divided by 1.3M high walls and sliding doors. This wall provides children a space like a house, and gives teachers space to overlook the entire space. In addition, the wooden frame is also used as lighting fixtures, decorating children's artworks, and as curtain rails that divide space freely.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Here is a space which Children aged 0-2 spend their time from 9am to 18pm.
They eat, sleep, play, create, excrete, and so on. In addition children aged 0-2 grow fast. Therefore a space which they need is change dramatically in the day and throughout the year. Curtains and sliding doors temporarily partition the space, Shelves and hooks for exhibit children’s art works and lighting fixtures with adjustable illuminance get together in those timber frames.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2018 and completed March 2019 in Tokyo Japan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The wooden frame was made by Japanese carpenter. Woods were connected by Japanese traditional wood joint named KUMIKI. There is no nails in joints just woods. The traditional technique provided a safe space for children. In addition, the woods were taken in near the site. Children, teachers and parents can feel regional nature in the room by touching and smelling the wooden frame.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Interior design is based on children’s activities in nursery whose educational approach for children is based on Reggio ne’llEmillia approach.
Children are esteemed as a individual person and It’s important to express theirselves with creativity in Reggio ne’llEmillia approach.
So, at first we started to find what kind of space is needed for the education.
There were some important functions which should be installed to the nursery like book selves children take books freely, a space for their art works, a space can be separated temporarily and etc.
CHALLENGE: The hardest but exciting time for this project was when align the interior design with educators. At first our design didn’t accept to them. We discussed many times by meetings and emails. Those discussions were very useful for understand each other, finally we became good team.
